Diarrhea - still trying new canned cat food

Ok, I'm a little anxious about this. I've been trying shadow on some different cat foods since his diabetes diagnosis last week and luckily he hadn't had any upset tummy issues showing up in his cat box - Until last night/this a.m. He has diarrhea and vomitted. I'm not sure what to do for food now. DO I hold off feeding today (can you do that with a diabetic kitty), feed him some of the dreaded Hills W/D the vet sold us when he had diarrhea from me overfeeding dry when he was constantly starving the previous week or try his staple of Wellness Chicken and Herring....

He had a new/different flavor the past two days - Evo turkey and chicken and then his "normal" treat last night of a Tbl of Chicken and Herring.... So I'm not sure how fast cats digest but I'd guess that his tummy didn't like the Evo.????????

He's not asking for food this a.m. so I know he's not feeling good.............any input is greatly appreciated as a quick online search was too all over the board about what to do etc.

I think I know what did it. I forgot I gave him a few super tiny pieces of my lamb last night. Maybe it was too rich?

Yes lamb could be pretty rich

FYI you might want to take down the candle icon that usually means a kitty has passed away. It just gave me a minor heart attack.

Did you see the post on the Wellness recall...there might be another reason there as well.

If the wellness you have at home is not in the recall, then I'd go back to it. If it doesn't cause diahrea then no reason to change it for now!

Yikes! Sorry about the candle! Talk about super newbie! Now to figure out how to get it. Ok, all set, thanks Jen!
:)

Yes, I saw the recall notice, actually got an email from another site this a.m. and almost spit out my tea... luckily it wasn't any of the cans he's eaten and is almost done eating. Of course I went out and got some more flavors and brands to try yesterday and one of them IS on the recall list. argh.

Got home from hiking with my lab and kitty was waiting patiently for me at the top of the steps, I gave him a little less than 1/4 cup of his Ckn and Herring canned and a little tiny amt. of the Hill's W/D (didn't want to do too much as it's high carb and I just don't like that brand) to help ... He has disappeared to his bed so I'll chk his box in a while and see if he's napping.

Thanks for your inpu:)

When we changed our food, the vet told me to get "probiotics" and add it to the food. I got a jar at the pet store. It really helped.

Thanks for the tips. I have probiotics for my dog and was trying to look online if they were safe for kitty but he's doing much better today. At least as far as his stomach goes... I noticed last night that he seems to be lowering his hocks 1/2 way to what neuropathy looks like :( Now I'm super worried doing a new food routine for 2 weeks (I wanted to wait just 1 but the vet said it really needed 2) is putting Shadow in danger before any insulin routine begins. My online order for a glucometer is supposed to be here tomorrow so I am anxious to test him again and hopefully get a reading this time! :)

Well, I can't remember your exact details but I see no reason to NOT do insulin and food change at the same time if you are hometesting.....the combination of the two provides the most benefits to the cat's pancreas.

The vet seemed to think Shadow wouldn't show much change in levels with just food change alone for less than two weeks so she setup his appt. for next Wednesday or Thus., can't remember off-hand since we had to reschedule dog appt. for his heartworm treatment followup tests(eek!)

I just cked the tracking and his glucometer is due today!!!!

Well I really don't think it takes 2 weeks for a food change to show an impact. Since you are getting your glucometer you'll be able to get an instant reading of where things are at and go from there. But if you see any increase in clinical symptoms (increased drinking, increased urination, increased hunger, decreased energy, poor coat condition, increase in neuropathy) I'd be starting insulin asap.

Remind me, are you testing urine for ketones yet?

Jen

Hi Jen,
No I haven't started testing at home for ketones yet. The tests the vet did last week showed no ketones in his urine.

Get some Keto-Diastix from the Pharmacy so you can check urine at home. You just put the stick in the flowing urine to check. I put some small plactic bathroom cups in the litter box to collect urine from my UTI kitty so I could check his pH. Putting small cups in the litter box may help you with your diabetic kitty too.

My cat is so nervous I can't imagine being able to get it while he's peeing. I do have to get those test strips though, thanks for the cup tip.

My UTI cat typically pee-peed in about the same spot in the litter box almost every time. He usually did it close to the corner and he did not even cover it up. So once I got the sample in the cup and since he did not cover it up, i had a sterile sample with no litter in the cup for testing for bladder infections. Worked wonders. Since I have 4 cats, I also set up a camera to make sure I got the sample from the right cat. i hate that he had so much stress at the vet's trying to get sterile samples before.

When I needed a urine sample from my Himalayan (19 when she died), I would put clear plastic wrap on top of the litter. She would go on the plastic wrap and I could pour it in a medicine bottle to take to the vet. That would have been an easy way for me to get samples from my UTI kitty and to check urine from my diabetic but when I tried that, they thought the litter box was "out of order" when they saw plastic wrap on it. Luckily, I could walk up on my diabetic cat and put the stick in the urine as he was going. My others would not have allowed that.
