Scratchie'smom

Poor Scratchie. Started on 8/13 the day after we picked him up from the vet's (Tech took him there while we were out of town as he would hide from her and she couldn't give him his insulin). Got out of control on 8/16 so called the vet and they put him on Metronidazole (1ml 2 x day). Has slowed it down but not really helping. He eats Authority brand food - beef (only cat I know that doesn't like fish other than tuna or chicken other than freshly cooked) so i thought i would add just a few grains of cooked white rice to add substance. Not really helping.

I used to also feed him small amounts during the day (4-5) but he was still only eating 1-1/2 cans of food (5.5oz ea) in a day. The vet also told me to stop feeing him that much and only feed him twice a day. He's already lost weight but I am trying this but don't see that this has helped either.

Picked up some Pectillin as I read on this site that this helps. With the antibiotic I was nervous to give him the full dose so have only been giving him 1/2 tsp twice per day in his food.

Is it ok to give him both?? My husband won't help with meds, insulin or anything else - will give him food if required and clean his litterbox out while I am at work and then screams when it's nasty!

I'm trying other foods right now, but I guess my main concern is giving him Pictillin and Metronidazole at the same time. Just started his testing again (he's been too miserable the last little bit) and his numbers are in 180 to low 200 and giving him 1u 2xday.

Your thoughts/suggestions are welcomed.

Jo

Re: Diarrhea - need advise

Go out and get Nature's Variety Instinct raw chicken frozen medallions and give half canned and half raw, and also order a free sample of frozen raw from Feline's Pride (look up the website and call them). The raw should immediately make the diarrhea go away.

Thanks Martika! I had read about that, but wasn't quite sure if it would work or not. The pumpkin puree didn't work, the pumpkin (100%) didn't work with my guy it truly is ECID - he does nothing normal. I'll give it a try.

Have you tried adding some Forti Flora or other probiotic to his food?
Metronidazole may kill off some of the beneficial bacteria too.

I never heard of Metoclopramide being used for diarrhea.

Why is this medication prescribed?

Metoclopramide is used to relieve heartburn and speed the healing of ulcers and sores in the esophagus (tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) in people who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD; condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus) that did not get better with other treatments. Metoclopramide is also used to relieve symptoms caused by slow stomach emptying in people who have diabetes. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite, and feeling of fullness that lasts long after meals. Metoclopramide is in a class of medications called prokinetic agents. It works by speeding the movement of food through the stomach and intestines.
