After reading in the group I am questioning everything the vet said. Even how to inject it. She hates being handled so this should be fun. The dry food he gave me, where to inject, etc etc. I hope to learn alot here, or my head might explode soon.
My son is a type 1 juvenile diabetic. But hes a boy not a cat. So I know a lil.

SO sorry for your diagnosis, but you came to the right place. The dry food is not the best choice unless you are just using it to transition from a dry food junky to wet food. The best food is a wet low carb food. Many here food fancy feast classic or friskies pate. I feed weruva.

What insulin did the vet give you? The best choices are Prozinc, Lantus, and Levemir. If your son is on Lantus you could share vials. haha At least you aren't squimish for needles. YOu said you were doubting where to inject? I'll upload a diagram to show y ou. YOu really can do it anywhere in the saddle area. Most start with the scruff cuz it's easy. Since your cat doesn't like to be handled you may find it easies to do it while he's eating. If done quickly he might not really notice.

Hi there,

Welcome to you and your kitty.

Just to add a little to Janet's reply above: in order to transition from a higher to a lower carb diet, for safety it is crucial that the cat's blood glucose is closely monitored throughout the changeover because in the great majority of cases the insulin dose will need to be reduced in line with the reduction in carb load.

For kitty testing specifics, here's a helpful thread:

They gave me Novolin which Ive read is wrong. Shes got some sort of mood disorder. Im waiting on prozac sugar free.
The vet never mentioned testing her at home, to bring her back in a week to be tested, but Ive read about that too.
They had me buy dry expensive food, but now Im attempting to return it, besides she wont touch it. I am trying to switch her to wet food.
I only adopted her 2 months ago and everyone was passing her by and I thought Ill be that one. She lets you pet her head on her terms. Before she wouldnt. All I know is she was matted and surrended. I spent a forture on insulin then I learn go to Walmart.
I bled last night giving her a shot but I hope it gets easier.

Ok thank you I will

Your new charge sounds a bit difficult. That too can be lessened we call it conditioning. You might want to boil a chicken breast then make bite size pieces and use them as bribes (FREEZE the broth!). For every action give her a treat. (I would say freeze dried treats but they can be costly. Many here use Purebites. )
We have all kinds of tricks you may find some here:

I does get easier. ;)

First, Novolin isn't "bad." It's just not a currently recommended insulin by the American Animal Hospital Assn. They recommend either Lantus (glargine) or Prozinc. The 2 recommended insulins last longer and are more appropriate for a cat's metabolism. Novolin has a shorter duration.

There is information on how to use Novolin on the support group board. You want to read the two posts on N/NPH.

It's probably a good thing that your kitty doesn't like the dry food! And, the manufacturer guarantees that they (or the vet) will rerun your $$ if your cat won't eat it. (Smart cat!) There are a wealth of canned foods that are below 10% carb -- we consider below 10% low carb. Most people here use foods that are in the neighborhood of 5%. You'll also want several cans of high carb food (over 15% -- most people use Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers) in case of a low blood glucose emergency. This is a food chart with carb information.

The good news is that everything you learned about managing your son's diabetes will largely apply to managing your cat's diabetes. The big difference is that your cat can't open the freezer to eat ice cream!

Please let us know if your have questions. We're here to help.
