Hello -

I’m not sure that I am in the right forum here (usually on the Lantus forum).

As some of you may know, our sugar boy Niki has been dealing with wounds from an injury in July (cat bite? Dog bite? never figured that one out). After numerous tests, an ultrasound, and several rounds of antibiotics, he is down to two small holes. Being a diabetic, we understand that this still could take months to heal. He lives in a conehead and a onesie, except when he can be supervised.

In order to speed healing, the vet has now recommended Manuka honey with Telfa bandages and vet wrap. We don’t have a problem with this, but we are concerned that if he gets the wrap off and starts licking the honey, his BG will really spike. We both work FT so we can’t keep an eye on him.

Has anyone heard of this and tried it? Any suggestions?

thank you so much!

Nancy and Niki

Honey does have a lot of healing properties, so it may help. It will probably cause the BG to if he licks it, but if you only put a thin layer on the wounds, it may not last long in his system.

Is he good about keeping the cone on? If so you may not have an issue.

thank you! That’s a good idea about putting a thin layer on. He’s pretty good about keeping his cone on so that’s a plus.

There are alternatives to the cone of shame, looks like a big red doughnut and if I recall partially inflatable. It was a Kong product, same as the indestructible dog toys. No more bumping into walls and problems around food or water.

Thank you! That's an awesome idea. He has a soft cone that he manages to "squish" to lick himself. Arrgh! Thank you!

@nikkiaz I found it with little thanks to the internet. If you Google 'Kong cloud collar' (now that I know to include the word cloud) the Kong website doesn't even pop up and when I found their site it had no product number. You will find many sellers like Petsmart, Chewy and Amazon. Our vet had never seen this and only one pet store here had just one in the wrong size. That was Global which I think is a Canadian chain, we're losing all our PetValus and Petsmart is taking over, the one here is understaffed and useless. Good luck, wait until you have a dog that can't fit through a car door because there's a 2 foot wide lampshade on her head.
