Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere; I'm new and I looked but couldn't find it. So Atticus has been on Lantus 2x a day since 12/31. He's on a very small dose, and I haven't noticed much of a change (he does seem a bit perkier, but wasn't showing much in the way of behavioral systems before anyway). We're going to the vet before his dose this evening to see check his levels since Saturday. I've got my fingers crossed.
I plan to start home monitoring soon and would like to have treats handy when testing him, since it sounds like testing will be harder on him than the insulin. I'm wondering what diabetes-approved treats would be safe for him to have?

The treats that I use for my girls: found in the doggie isle :? - 100% lamb frez dried; cat isle: petco - brand of bonita flakes; from feed store - dog isle - grandma lucys venison and lamb; from petsmart/petco - kittie & doggie isle - purebites - oceanfish, shrimp, chicken.
The only thing I have found that they do not care for is beef items...
Also purchase some raw foods from feed store: Primal and Nautures Variety. Primal has sample packages with a variety of flavors and are very affordable.

You will probably notice a difference when you start home testing. My Bean went from 301 to 35 with .50 of insulin. and again from 412 to 54 on the same amount.... Home testing is the bomb for knowledge as I would have bet my lst breath that she would have never fallen that much with that amount ohmygod_smile

May I suggest you find one that he likes and only offer that one while pokie poke time is happening? Seems Bean really associated that treat with that time. Now, I would offer other treats, but not the one she got only at pokie time. Might not matter to Atticus, but it seemed to for her?? ECID

Anything low to no carb treats are great! I found mine in the doggie aisle (freeze dried chicken) and both Poopy and civvie Mia love them!

Giving a treat specifically after pokey pokes sure helped Poopy get used to the BG tests (and made mommy feel better about poking, too!). He will now tell me when it's time for pokey pokes! :smile:
 
I get Beefeaters freeze dried treats in the cat treat section at PetSmart--they're very affordable and Bandit loves the Salmon and Chicken ones.
 
I actually just went yesterday and found freeze dried treats at walmart too - if that's more convenient! I didn't expect any there, but I thought i'd take a look....trying them out on Kitten when we poke him this evening...ahh!! (I think i'm nervous for both him and myself)
 
What brand of freeze dried treats did you find at Walmart? Every so often I browse the dog aisle in there to see if they've started carrying them yet, and I've never seen any.
 
They're called Pure Snacks. I got Chicken and Beef Liver. They had Shrimp as well. Not sure if Kitten likes them yet though...we were just shopping for a glucometer and then made a stop in the catfood aisle since I realized that if I was going to poke today, I better have some treats on hand. I also learned yesterday that US and Canadian stores carry different brands, but I would still give a look.
 
In the Wal-Mart dog aisle I found freeze dried chicken by Waggin' Tail and called Chicken Crispy Puffs. I do know not all Wal-Marts carry them (went to another in town since it was close to PetSmart and no dice). The 2 oz. bag was a buck fifty or so.

I'll be buying his glucose meter at Walmart this weekend (I think I've decided on ReliOn), so I'll look for some freeze-dried treats while I'm there.
We have a specialty pet store here in Dallas called Green Pet that I can check out, too.
