Hey folks!

Those of you who have successfully helped your cats through the agony of diabetic neuropathy - did any of you start giving doses of methyl B12 before your cat's BG levels were stable? Is it worth trying?

Blue's consistently weakening and it's heart-rending to watch. He has to crawl up the stairs like an old man, one slow foot at a time. He's too proud to allow himself to walk fully plantigrade, but he's certainly not on pointe the way he normally walks and he's become incredibly clumsy. He can't even jump up onto a regular kitchen chair readily. This is my extremely dexterous climber and jumper. :(

And ideas?

Hello,
Yes, definitely worth starting on methyl B12 straight away. Some cats will see some results even though the blood glucose levels are high (my own cat responded really well to it, despite high blood glucose levels). But some cats will not see significant improvement until the blood glucose is in a better range.
Also, giving the B12 may help to prevent further damage.

Take heart, cats can recover really well from neuropathy. But it can take time. Nerve damage can be slow to heal.

It 'may' also be that your kitty has low potassium. Just like B vitamins, potassium is lost from the body when kitties pee a lot. And this can also cause or exacerbate leg weakness.
A blood test would be needed to confirm low potassium, but if it is low it can be easily supplemented.

BTW, your kitty is beautiful! That face.. Aw... :cat:

I agree with what Elizabeth has said.
My Sheba had neuropathy and could not jump up any more and would have to stop walking every few yards to rest. I used Zobaline and she eventually recovered fully.

I also agree. Start the Methyl B12 immediately. Several yeara ago I adopted Spot who was an untreated diabetic with neuropathy so bad she could barely walk. Within a few weeks after starting the B12 and insulin, I could see some improvement. By 6 months she was running and jumping on furniture.

You can get Zobaline for cats online from Amazon I think or lifelink. It is actually methyl B12 tablets you need. Don’t confuse it with other types of B12
It’s in tablet form and I used to sprinkle it on the food. I don’t think it has any taste because Sheba never reacted to having it in the food.

I told my vet today about methyl B12 and he's giving him B12 shots. I will go on Amazon and get what you posted. Thank you. My cat is hardly eating...I just don't know what to do.

The injection are not the same product as the Methyl B tablets we use. A lot of vets have not heard of the methyl B tablets for neuropathy. Mine hadn’t until I told him.
If your kitty is not eating he might be nauseated. Cats won’t eat if they are nauseated.
If he sniffs the food and walks away he might be nauseated. Ask your vet for some Cerenia and ondansetron tablets to give your kitty at home. Another option is to get the vet to give him an injection of cerenia then get some tablets to give at home.
Cats that are nauseated often won’t eat their normal food as they associate it with nausea. Try a different food and sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top.
How long since your cat was diagnosed? Newly diagnosed cats often have lack of appetite.
Keep asking questions.

if you could set up your signature which is at the top right of this page under your user name that would help us.
Choose signature then after you have added the information press save. It will then appear at the bottom of every post you make and it tells helpers about your kitty.
In the signature write yours and kitty’s name, date is FD diagnosis, weight, type and dose of insulin, type of glucose meter used, any other medications or illnesses, country you live in.

Would eSquared Methyl B12 Sublingual Liquid drops be safe for Leonard? It's 5000MCG w/Methylcobolamin. The dropper is 2 fluid ozs and I think it's an 60 oz bottle. He's hardly walking ...I did get him a shot of Cerinia and 4 pill bubble pack. It's helped a little. It would do no good to buy the b12 in tablet form to sprinkle on his food...since he's not eating much. Help.

You need to post the liquid you are thinking of getting so we can see it. You have to make sure it has no sugar in. It or anything else detrimental to cats.
The tablets are best. He will have to start eating st some point, or just pull him with it.
How much is he eating? It is really important that cats eat.

@serian ive just realised you are new and posting on someone else’s thread. It would be better for you to start a new thread of your own and ask your questions and you will get more answers. At the moment your questions are buried in someone else’s thread.

Ok, sorry , I thought that I'm just replying to you. I will soon start a thread. What do yo mean by posting the liquid? How do I do that? It's on Amazon and manufacture by eSquare.
What brand name is the best in pill form? What does pull him with it mean? He's eating approximately 3 or 4 heaping teaspoons of his food a day. Thank you so much for all of your help and knowledge.

The specific thing in it that could be very dangerous is called xylitol.

I'll wait for your thread before adding my thoughts on the rest. :)

Also, I do not see, Start a New Thread, at the top right of the page. Again, I apologize ...never really wrote i
threads before but I'm a fast learn and hopefully I'll get it soon.

It's okay :cat:

Ok Thanks. Now what does pull him mean?
I just look at the ingredients of the drops and no sugar and no xylitol...just don't know what to do.

When you start the new thread, I will tag the person who said it so that they can answer. I'm not familiar with that phrase. :)

Well, I started typing a new thread. Got one sentence then couldn't type anymore!! Oh, this is confusing to me.

Autocorrect :banghead: Bron meant "pill" him. There is a technique for giving a cat a pill.
