Yep! Fish oil is okay. I put fish oil in Willie's homemade food and have found that his dandruff was eliminated... for the first time in decades!
I would strongly recommend using a high quality, pharmaceutical grade human fish oil supplement. Some things to consider when choosing:
1. There isn't alot of regulation of ANY fish oil right now. There isn't some magical difference between pet fish oils and human ones... it's all omega 3s. But it is less costly if manufacturers harm a bunch of cats than if they harm a bunch of people (exhibit A: the whole melamine thing from a few years ago!). For that reason, I would stick with a product made for humans. You'll get all the same benefits and have less safety risks.
2. Get a pharmaceutical grade product. "Fish oil" is a generic term... the beneficial ingredients are EPA and DHA. You want a product that is mostly those. If it is 1000mg of fish oil, but only 200mg of EPA/DHA, that means 800mg of "filler" which is of little to no benefit, and is a LOT of empty calories... and could be god knows what.
3. Use a product that specifies what fish are harvested. If a company is getting oil from large species of fish, there is a higher risk of mercury and other contamination. You want oil that comes from small fish...sardines, mackerel (not king mackerel), anchovies. Preferably from the South American coast. What sucks is that if companies produce the capsules in the US, they can claim it is US sourced, even if the fish is from China. So use a company you think you can trust.
I am using
OmegaVia for both Willie and I right now, mainly b/c I got it with FSA money that I had to use or lose earlier this year. When I run out, I will most likely switch to
this product... highly concentrated, small fish, company will disclose where it comes from, and it is economical.
Okay, i'll get off my fish oil soapbox now...     Hope the above was helpful!!
