Hello,
I own a kitty 12 years old who has been diagnosed with diabetes around 2 wks ago.. Since then she has been receiving 2 units insulin twice a day -morning, evening.
I also purchased a glucose monitor and took the reading yesterday. One hour after insulin shot, 6 hours after insulin shot and then just one hour before her insulin shot.
Her readings were all at normal range btw 5-6 (Canada ). Today in the morning I performed the glucose test and her reading was 5.6 again normal. I skipped the insulin shot.. Is this correct procedure ? I am supposed to check with vet the readings in the next 7 days, however I am afraid to inject her now while her readings are normal.
She is on all wet food diet Wellness/Friskies
I can probably perform the checks mornings and evenings as I am single mum with a little one and full time job... and then make decision whether to inject. However would that be the right thing to do manage her diabetes ?
What is your advice ?
Thank you very much,
Jo

Jo, that was the correct thing to do .....not shooting at a normal bg. What insulin is kitty on? Also, did you just switch to canned food from dry or has she always been on canned food?

I switched her to canned food just before she was diagnosed with diabetes as she was thin for some time and lost interest in food. Daphne is on people's insulin called Lantus.
Thank you
Jo

Wow. Good call! the switch in food and a little insulin to give the pancreas rest may have been enough! Keep testing her. Yeah for you home testing!!!!

I agree -- you don't have enough data to shoot these numbers.

I would suggest continuing to test at your usual "shot" times and get at least one test between what would be your shot times in order to give you an idea of where your cat's numbers are somewhere in between. It's possible that changing over to a low carb diet is allowing you to control your cat's blood glucose by diet alone. I would suggest you make sure you are feeding low carb only -- not all Wellness or Friskies are low in carbs. Between Janet & Binky's and this more recent food chart will give you the info on carbs in most of the available cat foods.

Goood job phatcat!

You did the right thing. and perhaps she is in remission already!! My Sugar Bean was only on insulin form 4/21 to 5/24! We test every once in a while now, but the first 2 weeks of low numbers, I tested at every shot time, not needing to get out the needle - was soo happy... I worked as well, so I had to wait til the week end before I could spot test, and she was fine at those readings as well!!!

Good luck to ya! :-D

Yes I checked Binky's site .!!! Thank you all for your help. I had to inject insulin as her glucose went up to 11,but thank you all !!
Jo

where in canada are you? I'm in Alberta..

How much did you give at that reading of 11, and how low did she go after?

I am in MB... I gave her 0.5 unit... and I talked to vet since then. I inject Daphne twice a day 0.5 of unit. seems to be working..she is purring lots and seems to be happy .In a week i will try to do the testing again so I can get the full picture of the glucose curve.
regards,
jo

Hi Jo, and a belated welcome to FDMB,

Sounds like everything is going well and you're doing a super job. I only saw one thing you posted that I feel the need to correct you on:

"I own a kitty 12 years old who has been diagnosed with diabetes around 2 wks ago.. "

As we all know, they own us! :-D

You should not give insulin when the readings are normal... I learned that here. It could be that your kitty is diet controlled, My Greylie was diet controlled so fast after I used FF which is wet and I gave my v ery expensive insulin to a cat shelter, I have read that every 8th cat can be diet controlled. The same happened with my Sophia she was a few months on insulin in 2005. I am so grateful that I got so much help here when all of this was so new,

Yes I know I am very careful with insulin.. however when I tried to not give her her anything her insulin levels went up....i give her I only give her 0.5 unit... and when I tested she was at btw 7 and 8
