Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have two diabetic cats, one just diagnosed, the other has been diagnosed for a little over a year. My kitty who has been diagnosed for a little over a year is 13 yrs old and had a bout of hypoglycemia about two weeks ago. I took her to the vet and had blood work done....everything was normal except, of course, for the diabetes. The vet asked that I do a blood glucose curve on her. Now I'm having a problem getting her to eat and the blood glucose readings seem to be all over the place. On Saturday morning, she started out at 95...she was given Karo syrup and did get her to eat a little...later in the evening blood glucose is up to 308. She is very lethargic. I've yet to hear back from the vet on the blood glucose readings, but any ideas or hints on getting her to eat would be greatly appreciated.

Is your kitty very lethargic now? How long has it been since she's eaten? Did she eat when you gave her insulin?

When you say she started Saturday morning at 95, did you give her a shot?
95 is a great number which did not need Karo, the high number later that day could be because of the Karo, the major ups and downs could be causing her to feel wonky and not want to eat.
Can you tell us what insulin she gets, how many units?
What type of food does she normally eat?
Can I assume you hometest from your post that your vet asked you to get a curve?

Sometimes she eats good and other times very lethargic. This morning she seems normal and ate well. I thought anything below 100 was hypoglycemic. Is that not correct? I did not give her insulin at 95...she is on Lantus. I can hometest. We usually only do it periodically.

95 is a beautiful number and not hypo, it's normal. I too would not have given a shot at that time but the folks on the Lantus Insulin Support Group may be better at helping you find the numbers that you are comfortable shooting at. For Tucker, I don't shoot under 100, he's on Levemir, which is similar. I probably should, but my head is sometimes stuck on old insulins we used to use, I have to unlearn that.
I would consider 40 a number that I'd give Karo, but I'd start with higher carb canned food first. Then test the BGs in a few minutes.

It is time to get more diligent with your testing, as you really don't have an idea of how the insulin is working in her. I'd suggest doing preshot tests every time to ensure she's at a minimum of 150, and getting spot checks as much as possible to see how the insulin is working between shots. Right now she's likely on a nasty rollercoaster and thats not going to be helpful for you or for her. And with your new diabetic, I'd strongly suggest the same. Once you have things under control it will be much easier and less stressful!
