This flyer has him in Pleasant Hill, that might be where his foster mom is. I know DCIN has too many cats right now but thought I would post this flyer..

10 yr old orinch boy...

what a cutie.

so strange they talk about diet control of diabetic cats and have him on W/D . huh?

hope he gets a nice home.
This was sent to me by someone on Brighthavens mailing list. Brighthaven http://www.brighthaven.org They are firm believers in Raw and use Dr. Lisas recipe-or something very close. The cat is probably on W/D because the shelter put him on it. In the past, Brighthaven was more of a sanctuary for special needs and senior animals, mostly cats. In the past they would have taken him themselves, but they have shifted focus to education about holistic and homeopathic practices. Instead they crosspost emails regarding special needs and other kitties needing homes.

Thank you for posting that Lisa. Yes, DCIN is juggling many cats right now. But I will at least get him on DCIN's courtesy post list.

Thanks Venita.. if the shelter put him in foster care it doesnt seem like PTS is likely at the moment. I am going to compose a email tho, regarding his diet ;)

ok, does this sound ok, not condescending or rude? email to contact/fostermom?
"Hi there,

I got a flyer about gus the 10 yr old diabetic. I am in SF, unfortunately I am not in a position to adopt him right now, but have posted his info on the FDMB, Feline Diabetes Message Board (thru http://www.felinediabetes.com ) One of our members on the East coast works to get diabetics rehomed and she will post him as a courtesy listing on her Diabetic Cats in Need blog. I hope this is ok.

We (as a message board) have rehomed many diabetics. So far, I believe about half have gone in remission, diet controlled. Sad to think their people didnt want to even try. I am glad the shelter has put him in foster care. Is Gus in danger of PTS?

One of the main reasons I am writing is that the flyer mentioned RX food W/D. This food is actually very high carb, and many of the cats we have gotten diet controlled happened because they were switched to low carb canned food (no dry). Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need the higher fiber/carbs in many dry foods. Dr. Lisa Piersons web site here has helped a lot in transitioning dry food junkies to canned ;) http://www.catinfo.org It would probably be cheaper for the shelter to provide a month of low carb commercial canned instead of the rx food, and it would be easier to find a home for a cat that doesnt need insulin.

As a message board we also recommend hometesting using a human glucometer, pricking the ear with a lancet just like a human would. That allows folks to see if the dose needs to be lowered, and gives the person a trend, an idea of what the cats response to insulin is, and can better avoid hypoglycemia.

Working for a shelter, I understand the need to work within the shelter guidelines may be necessary for you.. but I did want to let you know that if you need any help with caring for Gus, just post on the MB (link on the fd.com homepage) You do not need to join to just read the board, only if you want to post.

Sincerely, Lisa (Lisa and Merlyn (GA) on the FDMB) "

Do you want to give her the direct link to the message Board, instead of sending her through the old site?

Do you want this thread moved to the Health Forum so that, if she comes, she would be able to read it without registering?

Old site? The link for this MB is on the fd.com homepage. But yes, I will add the direct link for the MB, and moving it so she can read it would be a good idea! thanks! Does the rest of it look ok? I am now thinking I should mention dropping insulin dose if she changes to low carb canned. I dont want to give her too much info at once tho.

I have heard from Tammy the foster mom already. He was pulled from Contra Costa Animal Services by a rescue group, but when he ended up DXed, the rescue said they couldnt deal with that. His foster mom is a foster person for CCAS. No other health issues that shes aware of.

An adoption would be with the foster mom, not the shelter or rescue, and... he "may" crossing all paws, have a home already..will keep you posted.
