ok, does this sound ok, not condescending or rude? email to contact/fostermom?
"Hi there,
I got a flyer about gus the 10 yr old diabetic. I am in SF, unfortunately I am not in a position to adopt him right now, but have posted his info on the FDMB, Feline Diabetes Message Board (thru
http://www.felinediabetes.com ) One of our members on the East coast works to get diabetics rehomed and she will post him as a courtesy listing on her Diabetic Cats in Need blog. I hope this is ok.
We (as a message board) have rehomed many diabetics. So far, I believe about half have gone in remission, diet controlled. Sad to think their people didnt want to even try. I am glad the shelter has put him in foster care. Is Gus in danger of PTS?
One of the main reasons I am writing is that the flyer mentioned RX food W/D. This food is actually very high carb, and many of the cats we have gotten diet controlled happened because they were switched to low carb canned food (no dry). Cats are obligate carnivores and do not need the higher fiber/carbs in many dry foods. Dr. Lisa Piersons web site here has helped a lot in transitioning dry food junkies to canned
http://www.catinfo.org It would probably be cheaper for the shelter to provide a month of low carb commercial canned instead of the rx food, and it would be easier to find a home for a cat that doesnt need insulin.
As a message board we also recommend hometesting using a human glucometer, pricking the ear with a lancet just like a human would. That allows folks to see if the dose needs to be lowered, and gives the person a trend, an idea of what the cats response to insulin is, and can better avoid hypoglycemia.
Working for a shelter, I understand the need to work within the shelter guidelines may be necessary for you.. but I did want to let you know that if you need any help with caring for Gus, just post on the MB (link on the fd.com homepage) You do not need to join to just read the board, only if you want to post.
Sincerely, Lisa (Lisa and Merlyn (GA) on the FDMB) "
