Diabetic cat in need of adoption! EMMA

Emma is a very sweet tabby girl that I met yesterday. She is 7 years old, good with kids and other cats, and a lap cat. Emma's elderly owners were both deaf (and were not raised in the oral tradition and do not lip read, so additional background info is limited as there was no ASL interpreter available at her intake), they have been unable to care for her properly due to their advanced age. She was brought in to be PTS by the heartbroken couple, but was rescued and is now in the care of MRFRS (since November 2010) and currently residing at the Cattail Inn (Rowley, MA). Emma is not yet regulated, but great with shots, and she's currently on 6 units Lantus BID. Apart from being diabetic, Emma is healthy, if still overweight.

Hi Cat, I hope you're well.

Any chance you could visit Emma a few times and get some spot checks and also check the insulin to make sure it's still good. Lantus needs to be handled gently, not shaken, stored well. I'm not sure if the shelter folks know about that and wonder if that is why the dose is so high.

When a DCIN cat came to my area, Bill, he was on a large dose of Lantus but the vial smelled like lobster or it fishy smelling, can't recall, it's been a while. We switched him to a low dose of Levemir and good food and he went off insulin.

If you can go occasionally for some spot checks I can send you a fresh meter and strips, since it's been a while that you've had to use one.

The Cattail Inn, where Emma is currently residing is a very nice boarding facility that is part of a vet practice. She is under the care of a vet, and is not in a typical shelter situation. Emma has been very depressed, so they are not sending her back to the shelter.

Really worry about 6u of Lantus bid. Wonder what they are feeding Emma? And, if they are testing frequently.

I wish I could take her, but I have "no room at the inn." right now.

Venita, I don't expect you to know this, but Cat, can you check and see if that Care for Life plan covers vetrinary care outside of that clinic for folks who don't live in the area?

Yes, the care for life extends beyond the facility in which she is currently staying.

yikes, SIX UNITS of lantus!!!!?? That seems very wrong.

I will donate some of Fred's Lantus to whomever can take her. Still trying to get rid of it. Sounds like Mass is within driving distance of NYC.
 
EMMA has been adopted!!!! :)

Emma's new parents have been given this site as a resource. I have not met them, and do not know if they will visit here, but please keep your eyes open in the event that they do join. They visited her at the Cattail Inn and fell in love with her... apparently didn't even bat an eye at the fact she's diabetic! :)
