Need advice.I have been asked to foster a diabetic cat and im afraid I cant do right by him. Im in rescue but already foster many special needs cats . What I know so far, cat is on the younger side and the owners either cannot or are unwilling to continue treating him. They stopped whatever he was getting so he started urinating around the house so they booted him outside! The clinic is willing to take him in and stabilize him if he has a place to go. The owners want him destroyed. Im torn on taking him on until a forever home can be found. Are there any rescues that specialize in diabetics?

Try contacting DCIN. They specialize in diabetic cat rescues and depending where you are located, may know of another rescue that can help if they can't. There is a learning curve in looking after a diabetic cat, but not a lot of extra work. He should be on low carb wet food and an insulin that is good for cats. We are also strong advocates of testing cat's blood sugar at home - saves money and is much safer for the cat.

WOW! First can I just say I hope the owners get booted to the street when they get sick. Karma has a way of kicking back. You don't say where you are from or where the kitty is.

I learned more about how to help Jack and Scooter thru this board and the folks here. You are not alone and you are a much better option than the street. He will die out there if he is left alone. Also it is not as expensive as you think to care for him. So welcome to the board and just get the kitty and ask advice here. I always get an answer!

Diabetic cat care isn't difficult once you get the routine going.

You do a quick blood glucose test and give the subcutaneous insulin shot as close to every 12 hours as you can manage. You snag some tests between the shots, around the expected low point, to keep an eye on how low the cat goes. While you are adjusting the dose, you might take one day a week to do a curve (serial tests, every 2 hours, shot to shot) or a mini curve (serial tests, every 3 hours, shot to shot), OR each day you might get 1 mid-cycle test somewhere in that +5 to +7 hours after the shot and make sure you test in that range of hours.

Food should be low carb canned or raw, like Friskies Pates. Cat Info explains why and has a printable food list to use in shopping. With some cats, getting onto the right food may result in a diet-controlled state, as the pancreas can heal.

Found out a bit more and clinic trying to contact owner. Cat is 7,was diagnosed back in march, clinic notes say that in june they discussed 12 units proinlin(?) Twice a day. Then no communication with these folks until november when they were told the cat was ravenous and peeing everywhere so they put him out. That was two weeks ago. Who knows what shape its in now.

Probably ProZinc. 12 units is a huge amount of insulin. Most ProZinc kitties here are one/two units or less. After he is relaxed with you, testing him and getting him on a good low carb diet should make a huge difference. Can you get the insulin they were using so it is not an additional expense?

Or maybe they threw it away with the cat

If you're in the northeast, besides DCIN, you might try Fancy Cats Rescue - Ronda Dalton takes care of several diabetics for them...they're on facebook.

Poor baby....all this time with no meds....

Well that is just awful!!! Who kicks their family out when they get sick?? Wish I could give them a piece of my mind.

I'm fairly new to all this and I promise, it's not hard. A learning curve, but the folks here are super awesome and will do what they can to help. I've never had a question go unanswered.

I hope that baby feels better soon with some meds and proper care!

I am not an expert my any means but I do think this poor guy needs a chance!! I have an FIV pos. cat that the vet wanted to kill. We told him no! That this guy came to us for help and we were going to try to give it to him. He has been here now 4 months and is very happy and healthy and thankful to us everyday for saving him. I am sure this kitty will be to if only given a chance.

Thx all for the encouragement. The clinic was going to call the owners today to get the cats status and have him brought in. I agreed to foster him. In the meantime we were able to connect with Dcin and they will call the clinic tomorrow. Something has to happen for this cat asap. At least I would try my best and he will be off the street. A lovely woman from nashville reached out also with a couple ideas. Right now the cat is about 2 hours south of nashville. I would have to have a good sitter for him while im in minnesota for xmas. Thx again, im feeling much more hopeful for him now and I love seeing all your pictures and feeling the love you share with your kitties!

I really hope the cat is still okay! Untreated diabetes is like starving a cat to death if they don't end up with diabetic ketoacidosis or hepatic lipidosis first. It's downright cruel of them to stop treating and then kick the cat out for not being able to control himself. I know in California, there are animal cruelty laws that they could get punished under (untreated medical conditions).

I hope he is still okay when you get him. We are all here to help you in any way we can. We all love sugar-kitties ..... and civies too.

Can't wait to see your updates.

If you have a chance to see the boldy-owners...slap them up the side of the head for being so mean. ;-)

Oh My Gosh you are so GREAT! for rescuing the kitty!

I am in MN and can babysit if you bring him with you. Although I am north of the cities about 3 hours. Any way you will find it is easy after a week or two it becomes part of your schedule and the kitty will love you!

How wonderful that you are going to foster this sweet kitty :-D He will surely thrive being in an environment with someone so loving and kind! And no worries, the beans on this board will be with you every step of the way! You're in good company here :-D

All, I have left two messages for the clinic to call me with a status and I havent heard a thing! Before work tomorrow I plan to go by the clinic to see what I can find out. Its likely they havent heard back from the owners. In that case,...it would , not be the first time a starved cat found itself in my car. Thank you Chewie but I think you will be snowed in! If only that cat knew the drama he has created. He would be pleased with himself no doubt.

Hi all, update..the clinic spoke yesterday to the cats owner.they are waiting for them to decide what to do having told them what happens to the cat will depend on how far gone he is and if they bring him in and surrender him they cant make any promises. The owners came back with this...."does that mean we wil l never see him again?". I can tell he doesnt feel good because when he comes in he curls up on . My chest to feel my heartbeat. So, fellow cat people...I have had my share of losses and well know that pain. We talk to all types of people in this line of work and I would tell this woman that she will always remember how he leaves this world and whether or not she did right by the cat. Help is out there so for now thx again for all your support and thank you for loving your cats and going the extra miles for them.

WHAT !?!?!?!? I am confused. What are these people waiting for? It is the almost the weekend....what if kitty takes a turn for the worse? I thought they didn't want to deal with kitty any more.

ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile I am so :-x and
