Diabetes and vomiting

Is vomiting a symptom of diabetes? I ask because Martha vomits once in awhile and I am wondering if it could be because of diabetes instead of something else, such as IBD?

Do you test her glucose when she has vomited? I'd encourage that. Going too low or too high might provoke vomiting.

And what is she vomiting up? Is it fur? food? clear? green? yellow? What kind of odor?

Hiya,

My diabetic doesn't puke any more than my other four non-diabetics. But, I've had quite a lot of cats and sometimes they just....puke.... You don't always know why...

But, if it's more than the occasional puke... Has it become much more frequent? Have you changed the food? Are there any other digestive problems? Runny poo? Constipation? Any allergies? Could your kitty have a furball....? Very high or low blood sugar? Is it an outdoor kitty that could have worms..?

Are there any other symptoms?

If it's pretty frequent and your cat is distressed and there's no obvious reason then I'd suggest a vet visit....

My diabetic cat pukes at least once a week, sometimes more. He always thinks he's a lot more hungry than he really is and gobbles up his food so fast it makes him vomit. I feed him 1/4 of a can of FF (roughly 0.75 oz of food) and that seems to be about as much as he can eat at once. It's super annoying because it means I have to feed him 8+ times a day. Sometimes, especially after I've been out of the house for a while or he hasn't eaten all night, he will still puke up that little food. I am renting and the whole place is carpet...

Blackie occasionally vomits, and it's usually white foamy stuff. There may be a bit of fur in it, however, I think it's mainly excess acid. This occurs before her PS tests. Sometimes her # will be high, and sometimes not.

It might be the particular type of food that sets it off. I've learned that Mikey is allergic to anything with beef and venison in it, including the FF Classic Tender Beef and Chicken Feast. Check the can next time it happens and see if a pattern develops. I've heard a lot of cats are sensitive to red meats (like beef or venison) and various types of seafood. I just bought a variety of the FF Classic seafood feasts and will be finding out shortly if he has an allergy to any of those.

Unregulated diabetic cats are basically starving since their body can't process sugar properly, so they're a lot hungrier more often and it could also be from over-eating or eating too much, too fast. My last cat before Mikey had this same problem (although he wasn't diabetic, he did have hepatic lipidosis when he was about 3). See about getting a timed, multi-compartment feeder. I have a two-compartment feeder (they come in all sorts of sizes) that I use when I'm at work all day and stick either frozen raw food or a can of FF mixed with extra water (so it doesn't dry out by the time it opens for him). Check out this discussion, as there might be some other suggestions for what to do if that's the case.

I'd wondered about that connection myself... My acute onset diabetic, Mr. Sluggo presented with vomiting anorexia and dehydration at the time his DM was diagnosed. I think in retrospect, it was "true, true, and unrelated". In his case, a series of prednisone injections probably exacerbated his smoldering glucose intolerance to frank diabetes, and likely gave him a bout of acute pancreatitis (never properly diagnosed with blood work, but suggested by the vet) as well. Vomiting is common with pancreatitis and with DKA. I suspect your kitty had one of those two superimposed. Mine had the former, but N/V can be prominent in DKA as well. Plain, simple diabetes... not so likely.

JMHO.
