My vet has warned me that my cats teeth may cause him to come out of remission if I don't get them cleaned. I'm wondering what others experiences are with this? How often do you get a professional cleaning and how often do you brush at home?

I've been handed a rather large estimate on what it will cost and I don't want to take a risk by not doing it, but I don't have the money after so many vet visits since April (he was literally going once a week when first diagnosed). Dental problems definitely can bring them out of remission. They certainly are expensive though.


If you test at home you won't have to bring your cat to the vet to be tested.
 
What Janet said... They can bring them out of remission, or if they aren't OTJ cause higher BGs.

I've never had one that cost $900 though, even with 2 FORLs at once. What did your vet say was wrong?

To answer your question my cat just had her first dental about two months ago. She had a cleaning and one pulled... Cost about $700 including all poison meds for after.

No need for a fructosamine test. That should save you about $80. Does your cat have high blood pressure?

Wow that's pretty steep. My non-diabetic cat had his dental last week. Pulled out 4 back teeth cos he's having stomatitis. Only cost me $420 (around US$320). No meds after. No hospitalisation either. I sent him in the morning and picked him up after 5pm.

No he's healthy other than the diabetes that has gone into remission. I'm surprised yours was lower than mine with a tooth pulled, they said if they have to pull a tooth it would be in the thousands.

Okay so apparently my vet is crazy then. Maybe he thinks he can charge me this much because this summer they asked me how much I am willing to spend if he has an emergency while I'm away (they have a cat hotel and he stayed there in august) I said any amount lol
 
Our dental with 2 FORLs being ground down to the bone and a cleaning was only $350...maybe that was because he had blood work done a week or 2 before but still.
 
China's dental that she just had last week was $749.50 including one extraction and one root removal

The fructosamine isn't necessary and if your cat has had bloodwork in the last 30-60 days, they shouldn't need to repeat that

Otherwise, that's about what they run

Yeah, well welcome to NJ. Everything is expensive here except gas and tomatoes. Lol

Maybe get a second opinion. Did your vet do x-rays? If so take the x-rays to a second vet.
