Hello All,

I haven't been online for quite some time. I had Smokey OTJ for quite a while. However, he was diagnosed with possible CKD about 2.5 months ago - and that was confirmed about a month ago.
I have one vet telling me that he needs to be on Kidney food. But that makes his sugar soar!! The vet told me that was fine - he could go back on insulin. So we've been doing insulin again - but his sugars are still high.
I am having a really hard time finding the best food for him... He has been on Young Again and Fancy Feast.
Now he's on K/D dry and canned. I just don't feel that this is the best combo for him. Can anyone provide info on how to treat both diseases?

Thanks!
April and Smokey

Hi April :) We feed Elmo low phos/low carb and after searching Dr Lisa’s food list then trial and error on what he is willing to eat , we are currently feeding ( and he is currently eating:facepalm:) Whole Earth Duck pate( phos 130 carbs 4). Our backups are Holistic Select Chicken or Turkey, Weruva Paw Lickin Chicken and Cats in the Kitchen Chicken Frick A Zee or Fowl Ball. Hopefully some of this info helps you :) Elmo is also hyperthyroid so we avoid all fish . Check out Dr Lisa’s list for more ideas .

Thank you Beth!!
I have tried some of those foods. Smokey is meh on them.
How do I find Dr Lisa's list?

Oh , these cats and their “ meh” I put Forti Flora sprinkled on top too, Dance a jig, juggle plates  the whole routine just to get them to eat , as I’m sure you have too :woot: Hope something he CAN eat is something he WILL eat :bighug:
Thank you so much!! I had't thought of Forti Flora!! I will get some more of that!! My little girl has been sick with a UTI - so I have spent my weekend trying to keep everyone healthy and happy!!! I really appreciate your help!!

You didn't mentioned what stage of CKD he's in, unless his CKD is very advanced stage 3-4 he doesn't need to be on a reduced protein high calorie diet (kidney diet) K/D is seriously high on carbs ( I even used it to raise Babu's numbers when he went under 40 once ) , as they said try and find a low carb low phosphorus diet, that will help him, and if he won't eat the low phosphorus food you can add a phosphorus binder to his food.

Is important that he eats and also that his diabetes doesn't get out of control since that will also make his kidney problem worse, a lot of vets think that they have to treat the kidneys regardless of his diabetes and is probably the other way around, but is best if you address both issues.

You can also consider start giving him some omega - 3 supplement that also helps.

Here's a link to Tanya's web site where there's a lot of information about CKD

Unless the cat is stage 4 kidney disease you don't need perscription food. Look at the list and pick foods that are under 10 percent carb (under 7 is better) and under 250 phosphorus (under 200 even better). I used to feed bff cans when I had a ckd and diabetic cat. Do you have a copy of the labs?
