Both my cats Prop and Berta have been itching a lot the last two months. Berta to the point that she was bleeding and had to be on steorids for a week. It has never really gone away, just improved a little bit. I took them both to the vet back in october, but there were no signs of fleas or anything else. Just in case, i have been treating with stronghold for the last two months. But nothing helps. They have a bit of dandruff and im thinking maybe dry skin is the cause. The vet gave me fishoil but the cats dont like. Then I read about this http://www.drugs.com/vet/dermoscent-ess ... n-can.html and was thinking this maybe could help. Does any of you know about this product and would recommend it?

Im also thinking if this could have anything to do with the fat % in their wetfood. It is 5 %. Is that to little and could that be a Reason for the itching?

I have been thinking about changing to raw food and have found one for diabetic cats. But it contain 12 % fat and i have no idea if that is to much. And the high content of protein, could that be a problem with Prop early crf?

I hope some of you can help me.
Thanks :)

How's the humidity in the house? Less than 40% relative humidity makes people's skin dry and itchy; may do that to cats too. The product you mention has a lot of essential oils - some of these could be toxic to a cat if ingested in any quantity.

Is the 5% fat by weight in the can, or by % of calories fed? If the latter, it could be too low.

Check this post on CRF and Feline diabetes and do some reading. See what you think. To me, it seems like the phosphorus content has been implicated as a problem more than the protein content.

Thanks BJM :)

The amount of fat is 5 % pr. 100 grams (3,5 oz) is that to little and could cause the dry skin?

Is it possible to put some oil in the catfood to raise the fat amount a bit. The cats itching is driving me crazy because i dont know how to make it go away. Today I have sat water bowls around in the house near the heaters to try to raise the humidity, but I dont really know if it is to low. I am just trying everything possible.

I will be thankful for any suggestions

So 5 grams out of 100 are fat.
5 * 8.5 = 42.5 calories from fat, where 8.5 calories per gram is an estimates of calories per gram of fat in dogs and cats.

What are the total calories in 100 grams of food?

Now divide
42.5 / total calories per 100 grams * 100 = % calories from fat 30-70% calories from fat is not unusual. I aim for about 40-50%.

And yes, it is possible to add some fat to the food; you probably want to find essential fatty acids of omega-3 and omega-6, to add in.
Fish oil, krill oil, salmon oil - whatever the cat will consume. Start low, go slow, as intestinal upsets mar arise with too much fat.
