Dermatitis/reaction to Lantus?

Hi, I'm not an expert at all, but I thought I read something the other day while searaching FD....can't remember the site. But I did find this. I know this may sound stupid but have you checked the directions? I don't have mine and I didn't read it:smile: I got this off a Lantus site (this was human testing, but I thought it interesting.
•Allergic Reactions
Local Allergy

As with any insulin therapy, patients taking LANTUS may experience injection site reactions, including redness, pain, itching, urticaria, edema, and inflammation. In clinical studies in adult patients, there was a higher incidence of treatment-emergent injection site pain in LANTUS-treated patients (2.7%) compared to NPH insulin-treated patients (0.7%). The reports of pain at the injection site did not result in discontinuation of therapy.

Rotation of the injection site within a given area from one injection to the next may help to reduce or prevent these reactions. In some instances, these reactions may be related to factors other than insulin, such as irritants in a skin cleansing agent or poor injection technique. Most minor reactions to insulin usually resolve in a few days to a few weeks.

I also found this:
My son had the same allergic reaction as many others have experienced. It began about a month after he began using it. Once we suspected the Lantus, we had him switched to Levimir. Problem solved. The hives stopped spreading and were completely gone after a month to a month and a half.
Hope this helps somebody.

Hope it gets better for Bandit!

hi julia. i haven't heard of any kitties getting dermatitis from lantus injections. however, as heidi posted above, it's possible to experience reactions at the injection site from the use of any of the different insulins. if fleas and mites have been ruled out, perhaps it would be a good idea to try another insulin like levemir...

Bandit is finally showing major improvement on the Lantus (he's gone from 1u to .25u in a month), so I am very hesitant to change his insulin. I'll try rotating the injection site with each shot, and see if that helps at all.

Man, I really I wish I he could tell me if he's uncomfortable or if his skin feels fine. The weird thing is that it started around same time his need for insulin lowered dramatically.

i understand your hesitancy. at this point, i'd be reluctant to rock the boat, too.
it is weird that it started around the same time his insulin requirements lessened. maybe your vet can shed some light on this...

maybe he's just getting really healthy :-D
how about an animal communicator? maybe you could use what they say, what the heck? right?
I know I would :-D just a thought

I'm so glad Bandit is showing good improvement.

in that post heidi put up it said that therapy was not discontinued but rotation site of shooting areas were used.
