Dental nerve block?

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to give an update on Gracie. I ended up taking her in for a biopsy a few weeks ago, as she developed another rather large but squishy lump on her neck.

Both appeared to be fatty under the microscope.

I dropped her off for her dental about 2 hours ago. I wish I wouldn't get so worked, but I assume this is normal. I cried at her last dental. This time I didn't cry. I just had a mini-panic attack in my car.

When your felines get a dental doesn't the vet always do a nerve block? My vet ended up being on maternity leave and I canceled my dental and rescheduled when she returned. The other vet indicated that she doesn't usually do dental nerve blocks for cats. Wait, what?!? Is this normal?

Then I found out they cath the felines prior to surgery. I just know when I insert catheters on humans it isn't very comfortable and can actually be painful sometimes.

So many stupid emotions.

Hi Tina, I know... we all freak when they are the vet and dental in particular is nerve wracking. Deep breaths. I cannot comment to many of your questions but I can say that when I had a catheter inserted with no warning, prep or anesthesia I really wasn’t that bad. Hugs to you and Gracie:bighug::bighug:
 
I have no advice but if you think you get worked up get in line behind me.
Noah and Nigel were two of a family of six with cardiomyopathy so anesthesia time meant I would pray to every known God for my cat to come home to me.
Nigel was young when he was last put under but it was a big deal and I cringe years later thinking about it.
Noah was 15 when he needed to have all his teeth pulled. He only had a 10% chance of making it through the surgery so instead he spent his final years living peacefully and pain free near my feet on a rather big dose of BUPE. He was a good boy.
Me! I have something hideous called Trigeminal neuralgia and you're supposed to make dentists aware of this before they insert their entire hairy arm in your mouth. A side effect of my generic blood pressure meds is a dry mouth. That is not good for your teeth. Lucky me, the day came when I needed to be put under and have every last tooth pulled. They gave me a lot (a lot!!!) of drugs and I needed them.

Lol but not really. I went 6 months with dentists, DRS, and chiropractors telling me I had that. It was awful even though it turned out not to be. We all get crazy scared when we have to put our fur babies under. You are not alone. I have a 16 yr old Russian blue that probably really needs a dental but I am terrified to put her out at her age.
 
The older they get the more dangerous it is to be put under. That was my dark sense of humor this morning, not for everyone.
You love your cats the same as the rest of us, I completely get it. Better days ahead. :bighug:
 
Believe Me I get it too. I so appreciated your wit and sarcasm. Without that in life I’d jump off the GW bridge on another note have you tried a chiropractor for the trigeminal neuralgia? A lot of research I did showed it helped curb the suffering
 
I went to my chiropractor today for a huge dose of endorphins. I melt into that table. "Dickson, wake up. You can't live here".
I also have Chiari malformation, Tinnitus, migraines that make me puke (not TV migraines), cluster headaches, have had an aneurysm and stroke, numerous TIA's and many concussions. I don't think I'd do well on any dating sight. "Older gent wearing sweat pants seeks woman with spare scooter".
Preventative meds don't work but severing the nerve will. Forget that, I'm not adding "drooling" to my profile. :blackeye:
 
Lol. God bless you. Thank god you have a sense of humor. All that and a diabetic cat!!??? Wow my friend talk about the short straw. In case you ARE thinking of a dating site, I did once get a message from guy who was hooked up to machines in a hospital bed in his profile picture. Maybe you should give it a try? :D Seriously though god bless you. And your personality definitely makes up for all of that as long as the drooling doesn’t become an issue:woot:
 
As I recall, Dickson had a not just one, but a couple of diabetic cats, and already has a wife/partner/significant other, so no dating sites for him! ;)
 
Yuk yuk. Lisa might not be familiar with my life because I NEVER EVER blab about anything personal. My screaming hemorrhoids would be a good example. Wait, did I just think that or actually say it? :oops:
Yes Lisa, everyone here knows about the lovely Cynthia who also has full access to this laptop. I'm too old to play stupid secret e-mail account games or hide porn in a folder called "Don't ever look in here".
I had two diabetic cats, Noah and Nigel were brothers. On the left you'll see Noah sitting in our fridge.
I appreciate the thought (really) but I'm not waiting for a kidney transplant. I still have my drivers license because my doctor trusts me and I don't wander the streets in my undies wondering who I am. I'm super sensitive to light so as an added bonus I can give shots in low light conditions. Life could be worse.
This is CJ. She's a really bad driver so I bought her this car a long time ago. I really am thoughtful aren't I?

Stand up? I'm too shy, this is only the 30th message I've ever posted.
We're getting way off track but I have a quick "could be worse" story. Years ago I was getting physiotherapy for a badly broken wrist that the surgeon warned me may never bend again. Boo hoo me. There was a kid there and they were always working on what looked like his pinky finger. What a big baby!
This poor kid had walked into the wrong house party and realized he was not welcome so he politely asked to use the land line phone to call a cab. Someone shot him, aiming for his head. The bullet went through both cheeks without hitting even a tooth, through the phone and almost took his finger off.

How is Gracie? Those biopsies scare me when they appear to be nothing or are indeterminate. A canine oncologist, top of her class, told us our old dog would not live to Christmas because of what she saw in a needle biopsy. When she made it to Christmas we called her our miracle dog. After 200 days and regaining all her weight we stopped counting. It never was cancer but thanks for ruining another Christmas. If you don't know don't just guess.
 
Gracie?? I think you have me confused with a cat mom who gives her babies “normal” names. Me not so much. I currently have Little my sugar kitty, and Molly who is my only normal named cat ever. I was proud mama to orange, Boo, (originally known as Cuervo... don’t ask I was in college for god sake’!) and my three legger named Inky... short for her full name which was incomplete pussycat. Yeah. I did that.... Guess it’s a good thing I never had human kids!
 
Sorry for the delay. I’ve been a bit scatterbrained and all over the place with my emotions the last 24hrs.

Gracie isn’t doing so well. They ended up calling me before they started and said she was drooling. They suggested they give her a Cerenia injection and holding off a few hours for the dental to see how she does. They said the drooling was a sign of nausea. I gave the OK and they said she was stable. They did the procedure and she only needed one tooth pulled, but it was one with 3 roots (she said 3 roots isn’t normal). Anyway, they pulled the tooth and gave her a injection antibiotic.

They sent me home with Gabapentine. I gave her, her first dose last night. No real appetite. This morning when I woke up she was hovering over her dish. There was wet food in it. I assumed that maybe she was in pain. I gave her another dose and took a shower. When I came out of the shower she was massively drooling on one side of her mouth. I called the vet and they said I needed to give her Cerenia.

I came home for lunch and she still hasn’t ate much. Maybe 1/4 a cup if that. I called the vet again and they said to keep giving her the pain meds and to give her HC wet food. I’m skeptical, but what do you guys think?

They are going to have me bring her in tomorrow if there is no improvmenent.

BG was 183 at the vet and it wasn’t much better today.

One of her labs showed possible early kidney disease.

Tina, let's make it through the weekend first. A new thread about CKD will get lots of replies. As for the dental I have completely clogged up this thread with fluff so if things don't get better my advice would be to start a new thread on that too. If you have concerns and post here some people may scroll down and see my overly long posts and lose attention. This will all get better. :bighug: :bighug: :bighug:
 
@Noah & me (GA) @Lisa and little- I was reading these posts in the wee early morning while I was at the emergency vet ( will make a post about that later) and it definitely made me laugh. If anything it took my mind off of the current situation.
Anyway, I woke up this morning and couldn’t help but wonder if I was really did read that, or if I was dreaming. :):)
 
@Tina R Read what? Maybe you're sleeping right now. This happens to me all the time.
PS Look at what you just wrote. Such bad grammar! Those hard plastic chairs at the vet are bad for you, get some rest. I mean that in the nicest possible way, I've slept in those chairs.
 
@Tina R I think that came out all wrong. I'm well known for taking teasing too far.
I meant what I said about spending the night on those awful orange plastic chairs, I've been there too many times with cats, dogs and humans. :(
 
Dear lord. I had to read my reply (the one you were referencing) a few times. I couldn’t figure out what you were talking about.

I guess regular coffee and ADHD meds are not a good combo. :eek:
 
Two pots of decaf are my minimum. I also switched to Cherry KoolAid in place of diet Pepsi, kids at the market always find my food choices fascinating.
 
Oh man. You drink decaf too? I used to live on regular caffeinated coffee a few years ago. I had to switch to decaf when I started treating my ADHD again. Every now and then I sneak a fancy Starbucks in. I usually regret it, but and tell myself I'll never do it again. Oh, but then I do.

KoolAid still exists? I never liked the stuff, but I remember it being around.
