I have been contacting Vets around town to see who will follow what was suggested, how does this place sound?

Hi Nicole,

We would love to meet both Sadi & Baby. Here is the information you requested,
Our routine feline dental cost is approx $266.00
This includes: Preanesthetic exam, Preanesthetic bloodwork CBC & 6 slide Chemistry testing- ALKP, ALT, BUN, Creatinine, Glucose, Total Protein. We do this in clinic the morning of the procedure. Both of your kitties are in the senior category so we do recommend, but don't require an additional 6 slide chemistry panel that also tests for Albumin, Total Bilirubin, Phosphorus, Amylase, Cholesterol & Calcium at an additional $18.50.
IV catheter's are placed with all anesthetic procedures and we give IV fluids during the dental procedure.
We use an IV sedation with Ketamine/Valium then maintain sedation with Isoflurane gas. (we do not use any of the recalled Ketamine)
We monitor all sedations with a machine that checks pulse oximeter, heart rate and blood pressure & we have a Technician who also monitors frequently with a stethoscope to take every precaution that your pet handles anesthesia well.
We do not have a portable dental x-ray but can take x-rays on our standard x-ray machine during sedation if it is warranted or requested for a problem tooth. The additional cost is approx $120.00 depending on how many x-rays we need to take.
We only use pain medication, preferably Buprenex, only if there are extractions. (This is an additional charge)
Antibiotics are administered as needed on a case by case situation. (This is an additional charge)
During and after sedation your pet's body temperature is kept steady with warm towel.
We do apply a barrier called Oravet after cleaning that helps prevent tartar build up (this is included in all dentals)
Extractions are additional depending on the tooth extracted and if the Doctor needs to use a drill or suture.

Hopefully I have answered all your questions. Feel free to contact our office at (913) 345-8147 with any questions or to schedule an appointment.

OMG OMG OMG!! THIS PLACE SHOULD BE THE VET DENTAL PLACE OF THE YEAR!!!!
SO IMPRESSIVE!!
Just remember--No Covenia or metacam!!--Fantastic..is it real??

if i remember correctly that is what mine get when they are sedated. ok, just made a quick call to my vet's clinic to confirm and they said yes, they use iso :-)

Wow.. Roni & Cindy.. thank you so much, I really appreciate your prompt response & input.. & for calling your vet too Cindy!! :-D

you're welcome :-) figure i give them enough money they can answer a quick question for me LOL!! but seriously, i love my vet and her staff and just know i can do this kind of thing. i called and told them i had a friend back east looking to do a dental but was concerned about the gas and i told her i thought it was the right kind but could she confirm that and she said yes :-)

I go to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in NJ and they currently have an in-training Board certified dentist Dr. Scott - and she's great.

When the board cert dentist was there and Dr. Scott worked with him and now runs the dental practice.

Anyway, they used isoflurane. So I wouldn't be concerned with that.

The items that I do question are:

We use an IV sedation with Ketamine/Valium then maintain sedation with Isoflurane gas. (we do not use any of the recalled Ketamine)

Regardless of the fact they don't use the recalled ketamine, I would ask them not to use any at all and use something else.

We do not have a portable dental x-ray but can take x-rays on our standard x-ray machine during sedation if it is warranted or requested for a problem tooth. The additional cost is approx $120.00 depending on how many x-rays we need to take.

It's standard procedure at Red Bank to do xrays before the dental in order to truly know what's going on and if extractions are needed to know what and where and how deep, etc.

I would insist on full mouth xrays before procedure.

During and after sedation your pet's body temperature is kept steady with warm towel.

Again Red Bank has a good set up where they have a warming table and something that has warm water flowing through the cover (similar to a hot water bottle) and they can adjust the temperature of the water.

I only provide this as you want to find out more about the warm towel and what exactly that is, how used. As I believe it was Michelle & Doodle's dog who had a very bad experience with improper use of hot water bottles/heat after a surgery.

Other than that the price seems reasonable and what/how they do things.

If you feel comfortable with them, then go for it, just ask them to sub the ketamine and no metacam or covenia.

Sorry, I had to step away... had an interview for a part time job, trying to get $2000.00 saved up in cash for Sadi's dental.. as I am nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile & that is an understatement. I am trying to educate myself, have emailed A LOT of vets, just trying to get the right answer @-)
I value your input, Roni.. Cindy & Hillary.. all educated/experienced input is appreciated.. I will ask the follow up questions & go from there.

Sure wish I could sit in..maybe fly in all of you & Sienne/Libby too ...not enter the sterile field.. just observe in scrubs, hat & mask.. I do that from time to time because I work for a Health System.. but I realize I am not in a Vet System  & not privy to special treatment. I am sure glad I don't have kids because I would be a definite disaster & annoyance to EVERYONE!

Hi Nicole, This all sounds great. I don't think my vet does any of these things, and when Rusty needs a dental we're going to take him to the City. But he doesn't have many teeth left in any event!! Good luck making your decision.

Ella & Rusty

I am so impressed with the response you get. Wow. Wish there was a vet like that around me!!! The dental for Maverick starts at $600 up here. ITs crazy expensive for dental work. My dog has had three dentals and each one was $1000.
I'm impressed with your due diligence also. I'm learning lots.

Hope all is well.
