I'm wondering with canned food - without bones like they have in prey or the abrasion from dry food - do any of your kitties have issues with plaque build up?

If so, do you do anything to combat it besides having dental cleanings done at the vet? My older, non diabetic girl has had dentals done because when she has too much plaque she drools and it gets on her chin and causes acne. I've been looking into brushing her teeth because she's 16.5 and I don't want her going under anesthesia anymore. I'm switching my cats to canned food soon and am thinking about taking a more active approach to their dental health to hoooopefully avoid dentals at the vet.

LOL if I could get inside her mouth without losing an arm I'd let ya know.
God bless ya for trying.

Brush a cat's teeth? Let's see if I can bend this spoon with my mind. Nope, try something else...

I brush Harry’s teeth every night. I’ve been doing it since I got him at 6 months. He’s now 3 1/2.
My other cat Clover would scratch me if I tried it on her. She is not nearly as cooperative! But she had most of her teeth out at 9 months because of very red gums that would not resolve.
When cats eat dry food they mostly just swollen it so it’s a myth that dry food helps to clean teeth.
I also give raw bones to Harry several times a week, as part of his raw diet. That helps keep the teeth clean

If you don’t think you could brush your older girls teeth because she wouldn’t let you, you could try using a piece of gauze or small thin piece of cloth to rub around her mouth. You only need to do the outside of the teeth. Their tongue cleans the inside part of the teeth.
Don’t use human toothpaste as it is toxic to cats, but you could get cat toothpaste to put on the cloth to rub the teeth. It has an enzyme in it to help clean the teeth. It is surprising how slimy the cats teeth get.
Start off slowly by just putting the cloth in the mouth for a second or as long as she will tolerate it.give her a treat. And work up from there.
It is really worth while doing. Harry has lovely teeth and his breath does not small at all.

I brush Harry’s teeth every night.
I'm happy this has worked for someone, a YouTube star in the making. Years ago I took Elmo's temperature the old fashioned way and he seemed to enjoy it just a bit too much. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
