Squeak will be gong in for a dental clean next week. Is there a link to info for this? Do I need to be sure he is not given certain meds? He is OTJ! for months now and I do not want to do anything that might cause his remission to lapse.

Thanks!

Merlin has been on and off different antibiotics for dental, cold, chronic sinusitis, etc. over this past year. I recently found out that AB does contain sugar and you can request sugar free. His last AB was Azrithomycin (which I got from a compound) for his chronic sinusitis and it normally comes with sugar. You have to ask your vet to indicate in the script "sugar-free." Also, for liquid AB, you can get it flavored. I usually get it flavored with chicken and/or vanilla butternut (which several of my cats love). I was told by the compound that neither of those flavors have sugar in it. They also have tuna flavoring but I don't get that one.

I also had the office/vet put in Merlin's file in big red letters; No Convenia and No Metacam. Fortunately, I found out that his vet does not use either one.

Add to your NO list - Ketamine - there was a recall several years ago, but it's a harsh drug that people as well as kitties can have difficulty with - a better drug to use is propofol (yes the drug that killed Michael Jackson).

Ask if they are taking xrays before doing the dental and if extractions are needed - are they taking xrays after the extraction to ensure all the tooth and root is removed.

Are you going to a general practitioner or a dental specialist?

Will they monitor blood pressure, as well as BG levels?
Did they do blood tests before the procedure to make sure it was safe to do at all? You want them to do general blood tests to make sure there isn't anything going on that may not be visible and could put the cat at risk.

Not to hijack your post or anything, but at Michelangelo's last vet visit, the vet said his teeth had a lot of tar build-up and he could use a cleaning. He's only 2 so I highly doubt that he needs any teeth removed. Do they also have to go on antibiotics if it's just a cleaning and not an extraction?

It depends upon the vet if antibiotics are used, Usually if only cleaning with no extractions antibiotics are not given. Having heavy tartar at 2 is not a good sign, frequent cleaning may be necessary. That happens with a very few cats.

That was also my worry but the vet didn't seem very concerned about it and said I should just make sure to schedule for a cleaning to remove the build-up sometime in the next few months, so I'm thinking it might not be "heavy," per se. Then again, he did end up with diabetes at 6 months old, so who knows what's in store with this kitty!
