Well if those are the numbers you are seeing if he keeps it up for a few more days you will have a diet controlled diabetic foster kitty. Those are Beautiful numbers!
On a human meter normal for a cat is between 50-120 and we declare a cat OTJ if they can remain in normal numbers without insulin for 14 days with the majority of those days in the double digits and it looks like Mister Winky is doing just that...Congrats!!
Welcome Deb and Wink, Wink Wink Nudge Nudge, Wink Martindale! (Love the name, btw!) :YMHUG:
My kitty is on insulin and I could only wish his numbers were that beautiful! You've done a great job all on your own for the last four weeks. :thumbup
I second MommaOfMuse and I say he is well on his way to OTJ if he can keep those numbers up! (Or, rather down  )
Well, in a couple days, you can say that Wink is a DIET CONTROLLED diabetic. The DRY food is the killer for so many cats, so if Wink gets some dry food or is adopted to a home where they feed dry food, chances are good that he may well need insulin again.
If you like, do some food tests.... test just before feeding, then wait a couple hours and test again. You will likely see a lower number.
If you're so inclined, you can print out the Americal Animal Hospital Association guidelines for treating feline diabetes and share them with the shelter and the vet. If they're open to education, that may help them get up to date.
since he is not on insulin right now - i would get tests a random times day/night and see what it is - before, after eating, when he wakes up, just after falling asleep - you know whenever - it;s a great way to see for sure how is regulating himself
also, if he is walking on his hocks, it is safe to give the methyl - it;s just a vitamin and what the body doesn't need he will just pee it out.
he is lucky that you took him and are taking such good care of him!
my kitty is currently on Day 11 of an OTJ Trial - you can see her numbers are mainly below 100 but we have the odd one over.
When diagnosed, she had neuropathy but the methyl (we used zobaline) really helped and now she bounces up and down the stairs, climbs the garden fence and can jump onto the counters again ( ).
Oh wow - you must be so mad - I'd be tearing my hair out!
How crazy that they fight you on a vet visit for his weight loss but don't want you to do the curve which would save them enough money for another vet visit ? @-)
You've given him a great gift by getting his bg under control - well done!
