Today is our first day on insulin. Ripley was diagnosed six years ago, after a couple years on diet food designed to make him lose weight. Of course, after two years, he was obese, and diabetic, with bg numbers over 400. Vet wanted insulin then, but from what I learned on this board, I convinced them to let us try a change in diet. Three weeks later he was between 100 and 150, eating Fancy Feast and Friskies low carb wet food. Now, all of a sudden, he went back up over 400. We also had a new Vet, as the old one didn’t like me doing home testing and questioning her judgment. New Vet seems to welcome some discussion. He had prescribed NPH insulin, but I asked about Lantus or Levemir, based on knowledge gained from you wonderful people here. We settled on Lantus. One unit twice daily.
I’ll continue home testing, and report here. He agrees with most everything mentioned here, on this board. Start with a small dose, and monitor.

Here's hoping that Ripley reacts well to the Lantus and can go "off the juice" quickly!
