Robbie just woke me up crying - I ignored him for a bit but than wanted to make sure he got the autofeeder food at 3am - I came out and he hadn't found it - I watched him scarf it down kind of half awake - than thought - I better test him and see what's going on - so literally RIGHT after he ate it I tested and he's 418! I really can't believe this. He did have something to eat at 1am when he was going below 160 but not much about an 1/8th of a can.
I doubt anyone is around at this hour but I hate to leave him at 418 for 2 hours - plus the food will now pump him up more too I guess - thinking maybe I shoot him at +11 at 6am save him from a huge rise?

I tested him twice when I got 418 I was so shocked and it came out 418 and 415 - than at PMPS +10.5 I tested again and got 390 now at amps (almost) he's 370 - is he going down or just meter flux? I'm still planning on 4.5 and he's having his full can of FF for breakfast right now (and this is ON TOP of a 5am feeding that was supposed to be a 3am feeding of about 1/3 can watered down) and he's drinking about an entire bowl of water

Good morning Ellen -

Sorry - sleeping late (after my 6:30 shot), so I wasn't on earlier...but I would have shot the 418 as well. There's no sense to letting it rise, unless you're holding off like I've done a couple of times when doing fluids and wanted the 2 hours between fluids & shot.

Well, I didn't actually shoot the 418 - I waited another hour and it was 390 than 370 (I think I'm not looking at my notes) - so I shot a bit early but not 2 hours - I so want to get some "clean" days - where I'm not shoot early or fudging around with food/insulin etc. Just some sort of schedule that is consistent. I appreciate the comment - and no problems not being here god knows we can all use some sleep

The drop is interesting... I don't know what to make of it, but I've seen Grayson drop TWICE in a single cycle - but then again, it might have been the meter...

I've been looking for your post where I said I'd get back with you once I found what I was looking for and could do a quote. Since your posts aren't "by date", I didn't have any luck, so figured I'd add it here and you'd be sure to see it.

I was pointing out that we have the luxury of addressing how much insulin we shoot, how much food we give, and not a lot else. This is a post from Dr. Lisa's comments on Lori's thread that's been quoted and referenced several times - but serves to remind us that WE ARE NOT IN CONTROL of all the factors that affect our kitty's BG numbers! So maybe it'll make you feel better when you see some of these other variables that exist (so don't feel so bad if you're not getting the numbers you expect!):

(Lori - I am hoping that the last statement will take pressure off of you - not add to it. Copper's body is in charge and we are just along for the ride...doing the best that we can with the ability to affect only a few pieces of the puzzle....ie....diet, insulin, constipation, body weight - in the case of an overweight cat.)

Serum glucose, at any single time point during the glucose curve, represents the sum effects in the *rate* and *amount* and *timing* of:

*Exogenous insulin absorption

*Endogenous insulin production

*Intracellular uptake of exogenous and endogenous insulin

*Insulin degradation and elimination - different for exogenous vs endogenous

*Intestinal glucose absorption

*Endogenous glucose production

*Tissue glucose uptake and utilization

and then throw in the amount of exogenous insulin....excess body fat....inflammation....subclinical infection....etc...etc....

Thanks lu so basically a bunch of stuff I hardly understand is what's screwing up my plans huh? I think Robbie needs to just get with MY plan and bring his body along - I mean really after all I've done for him? Oh, well.... grumpy_cat

Pretty much! The fact of the matter is that YOU ARE NOT IN CONTROL! This tends to be a problem for some of us! Not that I'm a control freak or anything... ;-)

I dabble in control freakdom.... I think this was basically what the vet was saying to me yesterday when he suggested I ease up on the multiple tests and just do pre shot tests and like a +5 or +6 unless I've changed something and need to be on the outlook for a drop or whatever. He was basically saying - settle into the number you're shooting before you start searching for why it isn't working. But 418? what the hell....

Could the 418 be a bounce from the blues he saw earlier in the cycle? He hasn't seen blues in awhile.

I don't disagree with your vet about easing up on the testing - especially if it is driving you crazy. Preshots and midcycle will give you a pretty good sense of what is going on. If you question what you see, more tests can help - or if you want to do a curve before changing a dose. I do think testing alot gives a false sense of that being in control thing: if I can figure out exactly what is going on, I can fix it. They are cats - on a good day, they won't always make sense and with all the stuff that affects the diabetes, we are lucky we can ever see what might be going on. Wouldn't it be wonderful if insulin can with an instruction manual - that worked.........

wise words Sue... I'm leaving him for 4 hours and am a tad concerned but am trying to think that my BETTER problem right now was him going TOO LOW - I htink he'll be OK, at least I'm going to focus on that.
