Dinkus will be having his second curve done tomorrow. Hoping that we will be able to decrease his insulin a little. **fingers crossed** I have attached his spreadsheet that I have finally figured out, but isnt as pretty as everyone elses. :)

One note: when you get a low like that 34, you reduce the dose, so you may want to drop down to a 1.25u dose. Yup, time to reduce for sure.

Im soaking up all the info I can get and still very new to all this. Our vet hasnt been helpful at all. In the transition of getting a new vet. Thank you :)

If you are looking for a vet who is very knowledgeable on feline diabetes, you are going to be disappointed because there are not many.

If your vet is good with doing bloodwork tests and dentals, xrays, and gives the right meds when your cat is sick, then maybe your vet is OK. So long as your vet is working with you, that's what matters.

You can get all of your feline diabetes info here and other places.... maybe you and your vet can learn together.

I totally agree with Gayle. Definitely Dinkus earned a dose decrease with that 34. Those are beautiful green/blue numbers, but when you get a low like that you should decrease the next one.

This place is awesome with information. Kit hasn't gone back to the vet since the day he was diagnosed....and our vet was great and supportive! On that day she said that he can come back every 1-2 weeks for a curve and it will be 200$ or we can do it ourselves at home, send in the results and it will be 30$ to interpret the results. Obviously I went with choice 2. Then I found this place and realized that with some help, I can interpret the results myself. I fired off an email to my vet explaining my decision and she was completely cool with it and said to let her know if we have any difficulties whatsoever. So far, so good!

Please dont hesitate to ask any questions. Everyone here is really good at giving advice or at least explaining what they would do i your situation.

Keep us posted!!!

ETA: The 45 the day before is another indication to decrease the dose. Everyone is different and every cat is different. I usually decrease when I get a 50 with Kit. Some people choose a higher number, some wait for a number in the 40s. Definitely if you're hitting those numbers, I would decrease.

Go Dinkus!!!

Thank you!! Why I feel my vet is not helpful, is when I did the first curve, they wanted me to still give the 3U even with the "Lo" reading (see 2-19-12). I didnt feel right giving that much so I had decreased it myself. Then let them know what I did. Then they said to continue to do that. They started him on 3U rather than work our way up like I have been reading we shouldve done :/ I wasnt sure what do as why I came here :) (theres a lot more I could go into) So today he did not get any insulin and we started the curve. About due for another poke. Hoping my little red head can go OTJ.

I really appreciate all the info...

Welcome Angie and Dingus (I so like his name).

I adopted both Musette and Maxwell as diabetics from this very board, so they had already seen the vet recently and last Thursday was the first time either of them have been to the vet's since I adopted them and then they were there to have their teeth looked at to see if we needed to schedule dentals for them, and to have Musette's ears looked at. As well as I needed a new insulin script because I've switched her insulin from Lantus to Levemir.

Not only do I adjust Musette's dose myself, I also was the one that decided that Lantus wasn't a good fit for her and switched her over to Levemir myself. Plus I got Maxwell into remission a year and 3 months ago. And it was all done with the help and information I got on this board.

I'm going to also echo what others have said in that Dingus has already earn a reduction without even seeing his next curve. Normally the rule of thumb with Lantus is when you see either a 40 in Long-term diabetics or 50 in a newly dxed anywhere in the cycle but especially if it is early, you have earned a reduction in dose.

And I totally disagree that your spreadsheet isn't as pretty as most, I think it is absolutely drop-dead gorgous!!!! Of course we are big fans of blues and greens around here.. Don't get me wrong I love rainbows I think they are beautiful, just not when they are on a spreadsheet. haha_smiley

Actually running a curve today on him without insulin isn't a bad idea just to see where he will go without insulin, although he will still have a small amount of insulin because he still has a pretty big shed to get rid of from those 3u that he has been getting.

Just make sure you are testing him for ketones while he isn't on insulin if you can. Especially if he starts really jetting up numberwise.

Oh, yes, the colors he has are great. I just meant mine looks different... longer spread or something. Some of the others look so much more neater. Hard to explain. haha I wish I wouldve know about this site when we did his first curve or even shortly after. But I have it now. :) What reading should he reach to in order to need insulin since im "holding" it?

Hes been getting 1.5U for the past 2-3 weeks. I dont know how to test for Ketones. Vet never said anything about that. I also have 2 other cats and 2 foster cats in the house, so I dont know whos urine I would be testing..... :/

I personally would shoot if he gets above 200, since the renal threshhold is 250 and that is where organ damage can happen so you want to try to keep him under that.

I feel your pain on ketone testing, there are 13 of my own cats here, and one foster momma cat with two 3 week old kittens. How I manage it with Musette is either put her in the bathroom by herself in a clean litter box with aquarium gravel instead of litter or usually she likes to follow me in first thing in the morning while I'm doing my business she is doing hers so I just stick the ketostix under her butt...lol. Hey it works, not terribly diginfied if you ask her but it gets the job done. :-D

To test for Ketones simply go to any pharmacy and pick up the ketostixs that human diabetics use. i'm pretty vigilant with Musette since she is a DKA survivor. Another sign of ketones is their breath will smell like nail polish remover.

haha... Well if you two arent two "pees" in a pod. :) If everything goes well today, as they have, I will definately look into those. I wasnt sure if they were the human ones or if they made kitty ones. Ive used them on humans before, so thats a plus. Not sure if ill be able to catch him as well as you can with Muse.

I could rarely catch Shadoe for ketone tests because in a covered box, she faces with her head out the opening and I have no access to her back end.
Some have had to resort to just laying the strip on top of the urine puddle in the box as soon as they cat gets out.

Dingus' SS looks beautiful!! :-D
If you don't want to/can't catch him in the act, you can check for ketones with certain meters. Missy would never let me near her in the litterbox. I use an Abbot Precision Xtra meter with ketone test strips. If I get a big enough drop of blood, I can check BG and ketones with one poke. I just found it much less stressful than lurking around the litterbox, for her and I. It is more expensive, but worth it, as far as I am concerned!

Good to know! :) Yes, im happy with todays no insulin and readings. Im going to keep checking for an hour or so to see what I get.

That dropping on his own is a good sign! :-D That means his pancreas is functioning somewhat. if he can hang on to these numbers without any insulin for 2 weeks you can official declare him OTJ and then we all get to party :-D

Looking good so far. :thumbup
