considering giving Atopica to Vyktor (18 1/2 years old) for his lymphoplasmacytic stomatitis. It looks like it can be pretty nasty, does anyone have any experience with it?

I gave it to my GA Spizter as he had a Bartonella infection that wouldn't clear. He seemed to do OK with it.

I also forgot to ask about having it compounded too. A compounding pharmacy said they could do it but I since read somewhere that it shouldn't be compounded.

@BJM are you sure it was the same thing? It's an immunosuppressant, I hadn't heard of it being given for infection. At any rate I gather that would have been a shorterm thing was it? We're looking at giving it forever.

He had IBD, too. The med regime required a schedule due to its complexity. I believe it was to try calming the IBD, because the vomiting and diarrhea made his glucose levels jump around like Mexican jumping beans, and it was impossible to get a stable Lantus dose that was consistently effective. I had to go with a basal dose of Lantus, then use a shorter acting insulin when he was still high, or omit it when he dive bombed.

it's what Shadow is on right now.... http://www.petcarerx.com/cyclosporine-modified/13147#
for her ibd/lymphoma

using it as her digestive system is reacting negatively to something in the canned food....
but we have no idea what.

her bg's fluctuate with it some but nothing radical..... ( as you know, my schedule is off this week)
her bg's also fluctuate with the prednisolone which the vet hopes we will be able to alternate days and work off of that drug and keep
the cyclosporine

When Bailey first developed pancreatitis, we tried her on it, but she was violently ill from it. At the time she was already pretty sick from the pancreatitis though. She went on prednisolone instead and did great up until the last few weeks. Since pred. can contribute to diabetes, my vet wants her off it so we are trying Atopica again, this time with Cerenia which will hopefully control the vomiting. So far so good, though it has only been two days - in fact, she seems to be much more comfortable, so hopefully it is dealing with the inflammation. The version I got is for cats and is a liquid, so there is no need for compounding. Before I knew that I talked to my compounding pharmacy and was told they have to take special precautions when working with it because of it's autoimmune properties. I think like everything we have to give our sick kitties, there are pros and cons and you have to decide if the pros outweigh the cons. That's what I felt about prednisolone. It improved her pancreatitis so it was worth the risk of possible diabetes. But now that she has it and we've switched foods, Bailey's digestive and other allergic responses make her so clearly uncomfortable that I feel the potential benefit of switching her to Atopica is work the risk of infection etc. I already see a bit of improvement, so for the moment, I am satisfied with the Atopica.
