Curt had his followup visit with the vet today and was supposed to get a fructosamine test, but when I told his vet that he has needed little to no insulin the last several days and that his numbers on wet food only have been in the low 100s, she suspended the test and put him on OTJ trial!! Curt may be OTJ in 3 weeks! All the data I have collected testing 2 to maybe 3 times a days shows his diabetes can be diet controlled. Early on in the testing he was still getting dry food, and Whisker Lickin's treats.. which was my fault because they were his favorite and I felt so bad after making him bleed. Since I went to 100% wet, no treats, nothing else.. he has stayed consistently in the low 100 or mid low 100s except the day I caught him being bad and munching inside the bag of dry food all day. He was 400+ that day. Which brings me to the problem... Curt still loves his dry food.. he will eat the wet since he's starving...but he wont as much as he would if it were dry food. Plus the 2 civvies get the runs from the wet food so its a royal pain at feeding time and im just worried Curt is starving. So vet gave me Hills prescription M/D.. or should I say I bought it for 30 bucks.. Curt has already broke the bank with this, so whats another 30 bucks? lol. My worry is that even though it says on the bag its lo carb, its going to send his numbers back thru the roof and keep him on the juice :( Does anyone know if this is good food to give him? My instinct is to just keep him on the wet, but I want to give him what he wants too and dont want him to starve. Any suggestions?

Hills MD is 14% carbs and expensive. I wouldn't feed it. Is there a treat he likes that you could mix in or put on top of the wet? Niko likes the freeze dried chicken and it provides a nice little crunch. Or you could try FortiFlora. It's the animal digest that makes dry food so irresistible and is generally used as a probiotic. You can get it from the vet or online.

We generally consider a kitty OTJ if they are between 40-120 with the majority of time spent in double digits, for two weeks. Curt is close and hopefully he will continue to go down. If not, you can always mini dose.

I think I'm the only one who feed my two, diabetic Simba and heart Gustav m/d

This is their feeding schedule

10-11am - ½ can wet m/d each, and insulin time
then 100 g free feeding between the both on m/d dry (imaginary 50 g per cat but dunno who eats how much)
10-11pm - ½ can wet m/d each, and insulin and heart medication time
then 100 g free feeding between the both on m/d dry (imaginary 50 g per cat but dunno who eats how much)

And yes - it will raise the bgs.

You should have gotten the even more low carb EVO instead. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=62297

He likes those Whisker Lickins treats, but those kept him in the 300s... He also likes KFC grilled white meat chicken, but im not sure if thats good for him or not? He doesnt get the skin or anything. Vet said under 200 was remission? IDK.. she also said testing wasnt necessary during his DX day..but today she was very impressed I learned to do it myself and told me I was the best cat owner shes ever experienced with a diabetic cat  All very confusing.. I would thing under 100 would be best too, so i dont know why she said 200? Either way he has shown to drop his BG on his own after eating without insulin, so pancreas is at least working a little!! :) Vet also said to not really dose on spikes, if I want him to be fully OTJ and in remission? That didnt make sense either. :/

I don't know about KFC, but you can boil up some chicken pieces without the skin, no spices and "dress" the wet food to make it more appealing. Bonito flakes and Purebites are two possibilities for the snacks on top -both a little crunchy.

Not sure what she meant about spikes? What could happen is that if he continues in those higher 100s, he will eventually climb higher. Most mini dosers pick a threshold, maybe somewhere near 150-180. When the cat is there, they give a tiny drop of insulin.

He may also just keep going down. You can give it more time to see.

Well I showed her this spreadsheet ive been using on here, and the spike she referred her to was the day he had 2 400 readings because he got into regular dry food.

Oh, that does seem to make sense. Your numbers that day were clearly caused by the dry food, so waiting that out would certainly be a good idea.

Google EVO dry.

This is really good news to read!
If Curt was my cat I won't give him the dry M/D. I won't give him anything dry. Look at his BG #s it is proven what dry food does. It doesn't matter what brand, or what flavor it's all dry food & high in carbs. There are some people that feed dry & their cats do good on it.
I won't...I hate dry food & I blame all Baxters problems on it.
Since you work for KFC I would contact corporate & get a full list of spices etc that might be in the grilled chicken breast. Sodium count would be one thing to concerned about. To much sodium isn't good. Also, if there is MSG in it. Lots of fast food has MSG in it.

My vet told me the same thing about if Baxter was in the high 100-200 to not give insulin. Also, I didn't need to test as much as I do. If I am giving insulin you bet I am testing at least 4x day.
