Curious about anyone switching from Lantus to Prozinc?

Has anyone considered doing this?

It seems that what continually trips us up is that we never know how much of an overlap Dwee is having or if he'll keep dropping or start rising after we give his shot. And the whole having to wait for 3 days to see if there's bouncing and to clear a depot.

Prozinc. In and out. Technically should produce the same result at the same dose unlike Lantus which does vastly different things at the same dose.

I know Prozinc can produce sharper drops (which Dwee has anyway sometimes) and once it runs out of the system, there is no insulin acting in the body at all which is bad, but Dwee seems again to do this anyway sometimes. Goes very high before his next dose.

Has anyone started on Lantus and switched to Prozinc, or the opposite?

We went from Novolin to Lantus. Zeke has always been one of those puzzles that is hard to figure out anyways. Now it is almost seeming that he is wanting to be on a 24 hour cycle cause of how his lowest period has actually been around his PMPS. I actually have a caliper coming in the mail today so we can start using that and see if having more accurate dosing helps him. For me, I like the idea knowing that there is at least insulin working for him even if we have to skip a shot, or do a couple 18 hour cycles cause of going out of town or something. When Zeke was DX'd, he was at 600 so he can go sky high without insulin which is not good at all.

On the waiting 3 days, you just gotta remember that this is a slow dance. Can't rush things. For Zeke, 3 days (6 cycles) might be the normal, but Zeke likes to get active on that 7th cycle so we have to give a little longer lol. We are still working on getting regulated ourselves but thanks to Lantus, we are finally getting there.

I used Prozinc for my cat's first diagnosis, and the first six months of this diagnosis. It's a great insulin for cats that are newly diagnosed and just getting the diet change figured out. Many switch to low carb wet food, give a few weeks to a few months of insulin support, and are finished. However, when a cat is more complicated or longer term, I've usually seen them do better on one of the L insulins.

There is a way to dose Prozinc TID or QID that can help flatten the curve and produce a similar result to Lantus, but it requires frequent testing (which it looks like you do), and steering, and I don't know if there is anyone on the board right now who can advise on using that approach. I've seen it done on another board, but am not experienced enough to help with it. And I would think if you wanted to put that much vigilance into steering, you could just do the same thing here on Lantus.

I haven't been following your story, and haven't been on Lantus very long, but it looks like you're moving the dose around a lot. That can sometimes cause inconsistent cycles, so I wonder if taking a more consistent and slower approach might help Dweezil flatten out a bit.

There are any number of people who have switched from ProZinc to Lantus. You may want to post on the ProZinc board and ask about experiences from people who have gone from Lantus to Prozinc. The current iteration of ProZinc lasts longer than PZI. The biggest difference is that you can use a sliding scale that's based on the pre-shot number vs Lantus where you base the dose on the nadir. There is no depot with ProZinc.

I switched my guy from ProZinc to Lantus in February of this year. He's a tricky cat to dose and I certainly didn't get the same result at the same dose. You can have a look at January 2017 on his SS - that's ProZinc data.
