Mo was dx 3.5 years ago with diabetes. After a year if failed vet attempts of changing dosing and whatnot....i was able to wean him entirely off insulin and manage a grain free diet for him. He's been fine. Perky guy...in your face...lovey dovey.
5 days ago, i brought home 2 other cats. They've known each other for years but have been separated for years ( another story and issues going on)
Mo has stopped eating. I have been syringe feeding him for 2 days. The last 48 hrs has shown BS 234...265...283...309...441...this morning.
I have novolin in fridge...expired 1.5yrs ago...and not sure if i even have needles. I fired my vet and haven't found a new one.
Do i feed him? Do i look for needles? Is there a quick temporary fix? PLEASE help!

Hi Cara, sorry you are going through this crisis :bighug:. My first thought is these numbers may be stress influenced with "new" catmates, as well as stress causing him to not eat. My other thought is if you can test him for ketones and if they're above trace, get him to a Vet right away. I don't think the Novolin would be very effective if it's expired 18 months ago and no idea what dose to give him. Hopefully others will chime in :bighug:
Here's a video to aid in syringe feeding:

I agree with Yong. If you have ketone test strips I would test him as soon as possible. High BG and not eating is not a good recipe.
You can get ketone test strips at any Pharmacy.
Might need to find a very soon and get him in to be seen.

Maybe try giving him his own area away from the other cats to de-stress until you can test his urine or get a vet visit.

Yes, get ketones strips ASAP. Cats who are in remission from diabetes can fall out of remission and because he's not getting insulin he's high risk for DKA. Depending on what state you are in, Novolin - N is available over the counter as well as syringes in some states. If blood sugars are high he's going to need some insulin, even if only for a short while.

I would try to find a new vet ASAP as well.

Having cats know each other and having them in the same house are two completely different things. As far as Mo is concerned it's HIS house and being upset=stress and could equal not eating. Toss that Novolin right now and maybe try feeding him something different. If you have to syringe feed him and you've never done it before it can be quite upsetting. Another word for that is force feeding and it can break your heart. Do not let that get you down, you have to do what you have to do.
Like StephG said, separating them could be a good idea but give Mo a nice clean litter box and bowls too. He'll smell the other cats on everything they've touched. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Insulin, syringes, food, NOW!!! And find a new vet. Don't drive so fast you'll have an accident, things will work out.

I agree-- time for a vet visit. Numbers in the 500's don't sound like stress to me-- there may be something going on health-wise that needs to get checked out, and with those numbers, the not eating, and no insulin, he is definitely at high risk for developing ketones. Get him to a vet asap, with luck it's something minor and easily treated.

I want to thank everyone for your suggestions and support. I'm amazed at how wonderful strangers can be.
I took Mo to a vet last night and had bloodwork run. She gave me 3 options: ER running 5-6k with a 50%survival rate. Leave him at her office for subq fluids and syringe feeding with no one on site over night. Euthanasia.
I chose option 4...to her dismay. I brought him home. He took his last breath at 7:40 am. One of the cats brought home joined him at 12:15pm.
It has been a sad day.
Thank you ALL

PS. Sorry....the bloodwork showed that he had numerous underlying medical issues related to diabetes. Possibly bringing the cats home caused enough stress to trigger a domino effect. He nosedived and crashed.

Hi Cara, I'm really sorry to hear about Mo. I feel like a **** because I'm the one that wrote the post that said "Insulin, syringes, food, NOW!!! " and now this. This isn't about me, I just needed to say I wasn't trying to be condescending. I've been where you are now nine times in the last few years, I know it hurts. I am so sorry. Bye Mo.

Sorry, didn't mean to forget about Master Owen. Please try and be kind to yourself this week. It won't stop the tears, you did the best you could.

I am so, so sorry for your loss of your two beloved kitties. I pray that your wonderful memories of Mo and Master Owen will help heal your heart.

Until the day you are reunited...

Cara, you wrote that you were amazed at how wonderful strangers can be. We were never strangers. We all have a common goal and that means it's not hard at all for us to have tried to help you. This is what life should be like, without the pain. You are not the only person crying right now. There's a lot of members here with PTSD, people who have lost cats and dogs over and over again and we keep coming back for more. Don't forget us, we will never forget you.
Dickson and Noah, and all those who came before.
