CRF renal insufficiency

Hello!
Cessan was seen by her vet and she agreed I could do Sub Q's at home and Cessan is getting 50 cc's every other day. The binder is considered not good for use in many countries and Cessan won't eat her food with it in anyway. I found in Sweden on a Swedish ebay type site almost 2 pounds of the phosphrous binder and while it is not gel as we need prescriptions for that gel compounded powder Europeans apparently order from the USA and either customs allows it or doesn't see it or they get it themselves on trips or have friends bring it in.
Sadly the mans cat was misdiagnosed and by the time the vet figured it out he was dying.
Looking at the metric blood results is confusing and I have no idea if phosphorous was even tested on Cessan.
The man who is sending me the powder for 60 dollars said that his vet took blood tests but it never listed phosphorus on it so I suppose mine doesn't either.
I guess when I talk with my vet I will see if just starting on 1/8th a tsp for now would be ok. CRF is basically treated by this renalize or something I really have such poor short term memory I need stuff in front of me, sub q fluids and that is it.
I am having a friend send pepcid AC to me but I had some here and that is controlling her nausea and she is eating almost normally again.
I joined Tanya's crf group but haven't introduced myself yet.
I am sure along the way Cessan will need insulin again. I can only get Caninsulin and will need help.
I hear there are a lot of CRF cats so I will be around to ask for help as needed.
Thank you everyone!!! Bonnie in Sweden

Hi Bonnie.

gulp 60 dollars is a lot. Couldn't someone in US have bought it for less for you and sent it?

The vets here at Blå Stjärnan in Göteborg, have never recommended phosphour binders for my late kindey female I had and male kidney Gustav.

I am going to call the vet tomorrow on behalf of Simba, do you want me to pitch in a question about the binder?

Sure you can ask your vet. The price for 1 pound of the powder in the USA was 47 dollars plus postage. Here I got 2 pounds of the powder plus a bottle of slipper elm bark. The one jar of powder had only a few doses taken out.
Now it is in Sweden and being sent to me and I have no customs to worry about and save a huge amount of postage.
I would have had to pay postage to a friend and then she would have fixed the box to send without having it say medication on it and I would have paid her postage here.
My vet is very willing to work with me and wished there was another binder available but of course their wasn't.
From what I have researched the groups all use binders unless feeding KD and I would never pay 21 kr a can and Cessan would never eat it!
After reading up on tons of stuff the past week I do not believe that low protein is the right treatment. I think high good quality protein and binders for phosphates, Pepcid AC for nausea and sub Q's as required do much better. I know there is a host of other meds I see that people use but I have no idea what they are and my vet says there is no other meds used for treatment. No vitamins etc. I need to study more.
Thank you Bonnie

It would be helpful to know your cat's phosphorus level. Phosphorus binders are dosed by the cat's weight and by its current phosphorus levels.
You don't need to feed a low protein diet, but if you can, try to find some foods that are lower in phosphorus.
Your vet should also be checking blood pressure.

A lot of information can be found here: http://www.felinecrf.org/phosphorus.htm

The vet said it was an entire blood panel but for the life of me I have no idea what it would be here in Sweden.
I have the paper but I can't find anything that looks like potasium. On Monday the vet will be calling to see how Cessan is doing and I will ask her what the pot. level was and see if it was taken.
I will then ask her about the doseage but I will have to tell her what the chart on line says as we don't have the powder here.
I will put in when I find out on Monday.
Cessan is acting so good and eating pretty much back to normal. She is not as needy but still likes to be held and covered with a thin fleece blanket.
Tomorrow we can get some pill pockets and the huge production to get her Pepcid AC down her should be 100% easier. Right now it is like giving them to a lion.
What is your opinion on low protein diet for her? From what I have read I have decided to follow the vets and the researchers that say high protein doesn't hurt her kidneys. I can't see taking away her food especially since we have really no choice that is good.
But I would like input on that and on any other medication I should be looking for. I will have to get it sent from America so I want it to be needed of course.
Thanks Bonnie

Bonnie,

Can you write down the entire lab report in Swedish and post here so I can read it and compare it with those I have here?

Potassium is Kalium.
Phosphorus is Fosfor. On the large lab blood work at Blå Stjärnan animal hospital, they measure Phosphate (Fosfat) It is a biochemical product from Phosphorus (Fosfor).
