crazy wet food! yikes

yesterday i was at a small local grocer, and i now like to scout out cat food wherever i go, always on the lookout... at wet. well, they have their own generic, probably no1 else in the world has that kind, and it caught my eye at 60 cents for 13 oz! holy cow! i am always trying to find a way to put the other 5 cats on wet. i got excited for them (not larry). well i will be darned, it has corn and soy!! no wonder so cheap. i have nvr seen or heard of corn/soy in wet!! evn that would be at least 60.00 a month for 5 (which i cant afford) but it makes me wonder if it would still be better being wet and so carby!? hmmm i would like the whole house on wet. anyway, i wondered if any1 else would find this so bizarre. i jst nvr knew they put corn/soy in wet food, but i see why its dirt cheap!
 
Yep there are quite a few 'overly cheap' foods that contain both corn AND soy - another one is 'potato'....you're right, it's high carb too!
 
Although wet food is better than dry, that stuff could be really high carb and you could push otherwise healthy cats into diabetes. Before Dusty was diagnosed with diabetes my cats always ate Nutro dry that was about 28% carbs and they were ok, then I switched to Science Diet which is about 48% carbs and I think that pushed Dusty into diabetes. Of course I was clueless about carbs and all that then... :oops:
So don't buy that cheap stuff! Petco.com always has their food on sale, they currently have Fancy Feast at 14% off. A case of 24 cans is $13.20 which comes out to .55 a can and you get free shipping when you spend $49 or more. Plus they have a rewards program that gives you a $5 coupon for every $100 you spend. Most of the other brands are also on sale!
 
thanks. as i said this was for info/discussion purposes. i cant afford that dusty, tho it would be great if i could. as i said, i am/was trying to improve life for us, within my means. thats all we can do. if i could afford petco, or walmart that would be great. for 6 cats? no way, for canned.
this was just interesting/humorous/sucky info ;)
 
Hi Pam,

Have you considered home made food? I think if you get the meat on sale you would be making the food at a very very affordable price. I would bet cheaper than even the cheapest canned food.

I have 4 cats so I know how quickly fancy feast can add up. I am planning on giving dr lisa's recipe a trial run this weekend. More importantly than being more affordable, I feel confident that this diet will be healthier for my furbabies than even rhe most expensive commercial diets.

I will report back in the future my experiences.
 
KP, thats what i was wondering. if only i could afford it, i think i would feel better. :)
and..i forgot ur name, my health is not good. i cant really cook for myself anymore. just taking care of the animals, me, and larrys extra care is so totally exhausting. otherwise, i would love to cook for them :) let me know how it goes. :) we r getting by, best we can. wonderful idea, especially if its low cost :)
 
I am certainly not a cook and can't stand for very long. I make the raw recipe from Catinfo page and it takes a close to and hour and a half with prep, grinding and cleanup but that's only every other weekend. I pay about $25 for the ten pounds of thigh meat and the tub of chicken livers from Whole Foods.

But I also feed expensive canned food to supplement. Since I now have five cats, I am strongly considering preparing more of the raw food and doing away with the expensive Tiki Cat food and only using a little Wellness Core as snack food. I have one new civvie who will only eat the raw so she has to get the larger portion. I figure this would reduce my cat food budget by half. I am currently paying about $400 a month for cat food which reduces my own grocery budget to $200 a month. I cringe when I look at these numbers.

The start up for the raw diet is expensive because of the grinder and the supplements ($200) but I have been feeding raw for a year and haven't had to replenish the supplements yet. Also, at this point all my cats are not only eating the raw food but craving it. All the protein makes them less hungry and the health results are numerous and noticeable - softer fur, smaller poo, more energy and playfulness, no more vomiting...

While dry food is much cheaper on the surface, you have to consider the expensive vet bills down the road that offset this cost.
 
wow. thats great. i am so glad u r able to do all that. :) i love my pets so i keep them and do my best. after my food, their food, litter, and supplies, bills, and meds, we dont have any left over. so thankful i found dcin, so i can treat larry :)
