I guess I never really thought about the effects of feeding my pets seafood diets. I was stoked to find a 30pack of the FF Seafood Classic but now I'm second guessing my purchase and going to switch to poultry when the box is done.

However, my husband and I have been discussing transitioning our pets (1 cat, 1 dog) to a raw food after our diabetic friend told us that he kicked insulin through his raw diet. Not sure how it'll work for an animal, but I'm interested in trying. Has anyone tried this? Thoughts? Didn't find too much info under the Diet section. I would also like to compare cost. Any links would be appreciated.

I'm willing to try ANYTHING that will stop Garth from meowing 18 hours a day. I get an hour of sweet cuddly, silent Garth for an hour after his AM/PM feeding but most of the time, he is sitting in the kitchen, meowing, sticking his face in the fridge/pantry any chance he gets and hissing at the dog. The meowing starts at 6am on the dot but he doesn't eat/get his shot til 8am. I am wondering if I need to move his shot time. We are only 2 months into insulin treatment and I'm not expecting any miracles but could use the extra sleep.

Thanks!!

How many times a day are you feeding? In unregulated diabetic cats, food is not processed properly. Therefore, the cat is not getting enough nutrients, leading to the need for more food (and to meow for more food). You can feed anytime, taking away food for the 2 hours before the am and pm shot.

Thank you !!

He gets 1 3oz can of FF at 8am/8pm and he gets half of a can at 2pm/1am. So about 3 cans a day. I try to supplement with handful of freeze dried snacks throughout the day. I tried to freeze his canned food but he still eats it pretty quickly! Feel bad for the poor guy.

I feed Rocky raw diet based on Dr Pierson's advice but I use egg shell powder instead of bone but in the past Rocky used to eat bones but often vomited after so I couldn't risk him having no food in his stomach when giving insulin. Also it is better for kidneys as Rocky has early stages of CKD and lower phosphorus diet is better (bones and meat are quite high in phosphorus, egg shell is lower).
I freeze little portions of raw mixture in ice cube trays and voila ready to use whenever I need to feed him - well, he eats at regular intervals, every four hours. It is good to add warm water to the meal to make it soup like. I give Rocky lots of supplements as well and a tiny bit of green veg like broccoli and french beans as he loves them.
I agree with above - you need to feed your kitty more when he still has high BG as he is very hungry!

I'd up it to 4 cans if he's hungry. My non diabetic ate 4 a day.... Some cats just need more.

He still may not be getting enough food. Kudos to you for treating him and keeping a spreadsheet. However it is hard to tell effectiveness of the insulin without more nadir tests.
