Couple Questions

Hey everyone!

I've been reading through the stickies (gasp! I know! Someone actually reads what people spent hours and hours writing! ) and was wondering if some of the things discussed were still what you all are seeing, since it's been a few years since Prozinc was introduced and there's more data to go by.

Are most still seeing the onset and peak shift a bit later in the cycle after several weeks?

Are most still seeing smaller dose increases (0.25U or less) as the way to go?

How long would you guess most kitties are on Prozinc before being regulated/close to regulated (for me that means BGs under 200 for preshots)?

I don't have a spreadsheet (thought I did, but can't find it after a couple years...go figure!), but can show you his typical day (have been home for 4 days and been able to get spotchecks in :-D )

TODAY 11/30/2014

AM PS 498 *shot 2.5U
+3 374
+7 341
+9 401
PM PS 456 *shot 2.5U

What I can figure is his onset (based on today and other days) is about +2, nadirs at around +6 then goes up until the next preshot. From what I've read this seems pretty typical, but if that nadir would move back so he isn't spending several hours a day rising, that would be great! TID dosing seems to be what he needs right now, but I can't do that with my work schedule.

Any input is more than welcome!

Unfortunately most of your questions fall into the ECID category. The .25 increase is suggested when the cat is in decent lower ranges. When they are higher (400 or so) then .5 increase may be the better choice.

One question I have. Did he start on 2.5 units? Is there any chance he needs less insulin rather than more? One chamge I have seen over the years is that, with PZI, if the dose was too high, eventually the cat crashed. With ProZinc, I seldom see that. The numbers seem to be high and flat both with too little and too much insulin - frustrating!

Good morning! As Sue said, your questions are very much ECID. Unfortunately. I know that's frustrating to hear! Honestly though you'll figure out your specific kitties dance soon. It took me s bit with Gypsy but after awhile I realized she needed less insulin and started reducing.

Thanks ladies! Yup that ECID thing is frustrating but not much you can do about it. It would be so nice to have a predictable diabetic!

We started Tiko at 1u and have been working up. He's stilling spilling ketones so have to make sure he gets enough insulin. Ugh.
