Could someone advise? Unexpected reading at pmps.

Hi all,
I am a little concerned about Tims PMPS. I had not given him anything different (other than a couple freeze dried chicken treats) I first tested and it was 127, so I tested the other ear and it was 130. I am HAPPY! ASTOUNDED! but concerned... I just don't understand... Could testing too often put him in stress and higher bgl? He never seems stressed. I wrap him, give him cuddles before and after, and he does not even twitch, much less resist.
What do you all think? I gave him a can of FF classic chicken after. I plan to test again before I go to bed.

Those are great numbers! It's unlikely that testing too often stresses him out unless you make a big deal about it. If you're relaxed, usually the cat will stay relaxed. If you stress out, they feel your stress and can get anxious. Just be happy and enjoy those numbers. :) It's possible his AMPS will be high because he may "bounce". His body isn't used to normal numbers so it may overcompensate and produce too much glucose, making him have a higher number. With more time on insulin and the more they get used to being in normal numbers, the shorter the bounces will hopefully become. Every Cat Is Different (ECID) though... Some cats are more bouncy than others. :rolleyes:
 
Great numbers, yes! I can't really add anything o what granadiilla has already said but, welcome to FDMB, and congrats on those low numbers!
 
Y'all are so sweet! Every cat has an inner poser, I just got lucky catching TimTim in one of his adorable poses. He LOVES belly rubs and will lay by my side at night so I can rub him to sleep.... Every cat is a character, huh? I would love to hear about your cats and their "pet-ishes".
He hit 80 at his amps +6. Perhaps the nadir of the vetsulin? At pmps he was 328. I do finally feel like he is on the right track, though I do still want to change him to lantus. Now I just have to get my vet on board with changing insulin. I ordered syringes online, but they called me to get a script from my vet... vexing... I am taking Tim in for curves Thursday, so I will ask her then. If she refuses I will have to find another vet, or ask for a different one (multivet office).
We hired a new Director at the library I work at-and she also has a diabetic cat. I told her about FDMD and she is excited-she will be joining soon. I feel so lucky to have found you ALL!
 
Tami...are you still feeding Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers dry food?? All dry is going to be too high in carbs, and the "Gravy Lovers" canned foods are high carb too (we use them when our kitties drop too low though, so it's good to have a few cans around)

The "Classics" are the low carb variety...I've never heard of Fancy Feast Gold....or is that a particular flavor?
 
Tami, since you're home testing, you don't need to pay the vet for a curve. His BG will be higher at the vet due to stress so it won't be totally accurate. You'll get a more realistic curve if you do one at home over the weekend. Then you can save the money from the visit and put it towards Lantus. :)

Maybe you can call the vet or stop by the office (without Tim) and just ask for a scrip for Lantus and the syringes? There's also someone selling some Lantus on the Supply Closet forum if you want to bypass the vet.... Just a thought because we all know how expensive our sugar kitties can get!
 
Thank you both. I did purchase lantus off the "supply closet" but need syringes. I am going to call the vet and ask for a script and tell her I am curving at home.
I have changed Tim to FF classic, and saved what I have left of the FF gravy lovers in case of a hypo episode. FF gold is a dry cat food, and at the moment I am feeding him a mix of that and DM the vet sold me. I have ordered Young again mature, zero carbs for dry food and will switch him as soon as it arrives. Funny, he always only ate the gravy from FF gravy lovers. Now the FF classic, I heat it a bit, add some warm water, and he eats about 4/5 of it during the day. I give him another can at night and the next morning same thing-about 4/5 gone! As for the dry, I have given him 1/4 c. a day and he is not eating all that. I also swtiched him from temptaions treats to a freeze dried chicken and salmon. HE LOVES THEM! They are expensive, but I am thrilled! He would often come wake me in the middle of the night to give him treat-treat (temptations). He is so funny. If I don't get up after a couple minutes he will grab my arm and 'play bite' my wrist. As if to say, 'come on, ma, get your butt up'. hahahaha. Love my Timmies!

I always take my paperwork along with me (the papers that show my cat's diagnosis of diabetes from the vet/that she's on insulin) whenever I go to either a Walmart or grocery store pharmacy for syringes; have never had a problem getting them when I show the papers. That said, it just occurred to me that the law may differ depending on the state. (Maybe some states require an Rx for syringes now???)

Yes that is true, I remember reading it I think on one of the Canadian pharmacy site. About 6 states require scripts. I do know PA does not.
