Well three weeks ago i had adopted a stray that needed a home and would not leave my backyard porch. Rain, shine or snow she would stay right by my door until i would go outside and even then she would try to sneak in so i took her in during a really bad snow storm and kept her. I did all the shots she needed and got her fixed.

In the begining my other cat, Luscious (who is the diabetic one) wasn't very happy, and you could have seen it in her meter reading. It took about a week to get her down in numbers. She was always regulated in about 1-2 unites but that week she went as high as almost 5 units! I even made the apt for the doctor.

Well after the first week i changed her food from Fancy to Wellness and worked hard on regulating her back down. Little by little she went down as she and the new cat started becoming friends. its been three weeks now and wherever my cat goes the new cat follows. They dont play as much together (my cat is 9 yrs old and my new cat is 7 months old) but they do like being next to each other now and for the past week Luscious has been doing AWESOME!

she went as far a three days with now insulin needed! And if it gets high, only .5 units hold her down and by her next reading she doesnt need it anymore!

Im so excited to think that she is getting better!!

Could it be that she may be on the road to no more insulin? Its been a week now like this.
Could it also be that maybe having the new cat around has made her feel like shes not lonely and now shes happy and is making her feel better?
Could it have been the food change? Although when she was high the food wasn't helping that much but i guess it took time.

She feels so good now that she doesnt even need to finish her whole food! Usually she eats it all up and crys for minutes for more.
She actually saves some for the new kitty, since now shes the one thats always hungry. lol

If the glucose is between 50 and 150 without insulin for 2 weeks, we consider the cat off the juice (OTJ)

Maybe you might run a curve (test every 2 hours) and post the numbers for us to review?

It may well be the combination of low carb food and less stress now that he new cat is settled.

However to help her, instead of giving 0.5units once a day, you might want to give 0.25units twice a day . Lantus works better dosed twice a day and will be a little supplement to her pancreas instead of going cold turkey. Do you have syringes with 1/2 unit markings?

Here is how 0.25units looks:

Then if she is still under 150 after 5 days on the 0.5 units,or drops below 50 at any point, then drop to 0.1units twice a day for 5 days. Wean her off gradually so her pancreas can cope.

Plus give her little mini meals through the day.

Do you have readings you could share for the last week? We will be able to look and see how she is doing..
