Cosmo isn't eating

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted here. We have Cosmo pretty well regulated. It's been 7 months since his diagnosis and we've gotten into a good routine and he's been doing SO well.

I might be early on freaking out but he hasn't really eaten anything today. He ate maybe half of his morning meal and hasn't touched his evening meal. I even offered his favorite dry food and he couldn't be bothered by it, all he wants to do is sleep.

Part of me is hoping his food may be bad? So his tummy is hurting which is why he wasn't interested in his evening meal. (But then again I just spent $50 on his food so that would suck if it was). I order his food online and it gets shipped to me. We've had a string of super hot days so maybe the cans were affected? Is there anyone that can tell me if that's possible? If that's not possible and you think the food is fine, do you have any suggestions or advice?

TIA

Since he had a history of pancratitis that's my first thought. If he's still off food tomorrow morning id bring him in.

Cerenia if you have it. Not sure if you have any pain meds from his first flare.

For Jones, he loves to cuddle with a little heat on his tummy.

Do you happen to have any unsalted just plain bone broth around? I make home made broth for Jones and just warm it up. He will usually drink it - which give him fluids and it seems to sooth the tummy. 20-30 mins later he will eat something.

Cerenia if you have it, fluids.... Does he look to be uncomfortable or in pain?

I don't have cerenia. He definitely is off. I don't think he's in pain but uncomfortable would be a good word for it. He's just kind of laying around. He will approach us and accept pets for a little while but then he'll go back to laying on the ground or in his bed.

Yeah could be a flare starting. Do you still have any sub q's from his last time?

I don't have anything like that, this is the first time this has ever happened to him. If he doesn't eat his morning meal again tomorrow I'll go straight to the store!

I use the bone broth for both Jones and my CKD civvie kitty.

3 lbs of chicken necks and backs (usually I find them in the frozen area), 2 cups of cold water per # of meat and 2 tbsp of cider vinegar per # of meat. Put everything together in a pot and let sit for an hour. Turn it on a let simmer for 6 hrs until the bones are soft. Strain with cheesecloth to get rid of all the bones and excess stuff. I use the slow cooker.

I actually freeze the batch in a ice cube trays and leave the broth cubes out to warm up to to room temperature. Not that they make it that long. When it was hot all of them were licking the cubes.:D

Any kitty that doesn't eat for 2 days should be seen by a vet especially one with FD. How has his BG's been?

I planned on contacting the vet tomorrow if he doesn't eat again in the morning, that's a day and a half and that's way too long for me. I have to be entirely honest, my fiancé and I are hardly paying the bills as is. Between his insulin and food we haven't been able to afford to get a BG tester. We haven't ever home tested (the vet said that was okay as long as we felt he was regulated enough and we were comfortable with it). Part of my panic probably comes from the fact that this will lead to a very expensive vet visit. I love my baby with all my heart and I would do anything for him but he is damn expensive!

theres never been a last time so I am totally unprepared, this is the first time =(

you have it in your signature that he had it.

OK well when my cat had it he was eating but not as much as usual for a few days when I brought him in.

They have cerenia for nausea, bupe for pain (it's painful.... Cats are good at hiding it)... We were already doing fluids a few times a week for ckd, but increased it to every day for a while. Took him about 6 days to be more himself.

Are you sure it's not dka then? Do you have any strips to test his urine for ketones?

but he is damn expensive
Yep, been there a few times with my fuzzy butts. I finally got insurance on the kitties and thank god I did. It has saved me a few bucks with Jones.

I believe in the US most people just use the Relion meter from Walmart but I can't quote prices. @Yong - do you have something in your library;)

@JanetNJ may have something on that DKA. The keytone strips can also be picked up at any human pharmacy.

My apologies, I should be more specific. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis at the same time he was diagnosed with diabetes and kidney disease. We brought him to the vet because he was peeing so much I was cleaning the litter box way more often than anyone should. I've never had an issue with him not eating. This is the first time in his 13 years of life that he's ever turned away food like this.

Pancreatitis can cause nausea and pain. Only thing my boy would want to eat with his mild flare was his Young Again Zero dry.

I think a vet consult may be advisable. The keytone strips are an quick and easy item to get and all it takes is a drop of pee. The worst part is catching them going. Then DKA can be ruled out.

I don't know, that sounds like Jones when he is having a flare, he won't eat as much, goes to the food and sniffs and leaves, will spend a lot of time in the loaf position. Wants to cuddle so his tummy can be warmed up on my lap.
