Corn litter in Texas?

Hi all,
Wanted to try a new litter for my diabetic cat and heard rave reviews about "World's Best" so I bought some yesterday and she didn't mind one bit that I did a 100% swap right out of the gate. My concern though is that now that I've dug deeper (maybe I should've checked into this BEFORE buying the litter) I'm finding that in humid states, there may be a concern with mold and the aflatoxin fungus. My cat does have an autoimmune disease and is on steroids daily so between those two things, should I be worried about this litter harming her? I live in Houston, TX. What can I do to keep my risk low of having problems? Anyone here live in Texas or a humid state that use this litter?

Thanks for your replies! :)

Hi Katie!
I have used the corn litter but here it draws ants and mice. We're up on the TX/OK border on a lake so we have the humidity also. I had to always take any used litter out to the outside garbage cans or we'd have used litter everywhere - those mice can even lift my garbage can lids. They LOVED it.... I also notice that it does mold outside. We've changed to the crushed walnut shells and like it much better.

^^Yep!! Mine would lick his paws with the corn litter & it does raise the numbers ohmygod_smile I also switched to Blue Buffalo crushed walnuts & love it!! It's soooo much nicer & cheaper. It's very finely ground tho so get a good catcher mat for in front of the box to eliminate it getting everywhere. Other than that it's my fav litter yet!

Neither of you ladies have any problems with brown dust everywhere though? That's the biggest con I've been reading about. What formula of Blue do y'all use~multi-cat or original? We have white carpet not too far away from the litter boxes so that has me concerned quite a bit....

How about using a washable area rug to protect the white rug. That way you can try the litter and your rug will be safe.

Honestly what I like about the brown litter is...I can see it to sweep it and it does not cement itself in the carpet fibers or to the linoleum :) I prefer the Multi Cat even though I only have one cat using it. The particles are larger and it clumps quicker I think. You still need to let it sit 7-10 minutes before scooping for the clumps to become more solid. Wet clumps crumble.

I think it covers smell amazing. You can always do your own ammonia test :) take your current litter and the walnut litter and the same amount of ammonia and sniff wait a few seconds and sniff. I think you'll be amazed.

That being said...If your cat has light paws, I hear that it may stain the fur.

I know some people who mix the WB and BB litter and claim that is the perfect litter :)

If you look at Petco or PetSmart, look on the Blue Buffalo cat food for stick on coupons for $5.00 off. Peel it and use it! If you can't find any...PM me.

No I don't have any dust at all from it. And I have a white cat with no staining on his fur either, he's my sugar cat so he's in the box more than the others to. I use multi formula & I used to mix it with the corn at 1st but like pp mentioned the odor control is soooo much better by itself! And she's right it does clean up on surfaces much easier.

ittybit~are you in a humid state as well?

Think i'm going to try a bag of the BB multi-cat formula and see how it goes. We move into our new house at the end of this month so i'll know if it's dusty or not by then if i'll even allow it in my house! lol Think i may buy a good mat for outside the box as well so they can kindof "wipe their feet" on the way out but we'll see~my one cat sometimes misses the box and goes outside the front so it may just be a waste of money.
Oh and as my username suggests....my cats names are Onyx and Inky and yes they are both all black so i hope the litter doesn't stain their paws either!

I live in KS & we're right off the Missouri River so yes it's incredibly humid
Even if you decide to mix the 2 you'll like it much more than just corn. Just watch if the bs starts elevating corn litter could be the cause. GL!!

Thanks! Reason I asked if you were in a humid state as well is some of the negative reviews were ppl saying it was super dusty and then I noticed a lot were in humid areas so I wondered if that had something to do with it. Gives me hope to hear that you're humid as well so keeping my fingers crossed that I can contain the dust! Moving into a new house I'm going to be very protective of not staining from litter if I can help it! Haven't quite figured out how i'm going to make sure they NEVER throw up on the carpet yet...... ;-)

Thanks for all the info! :)

If you have cats, you'll have furballs. Put down sacrificial sheets, like dust covers on furniture. So much easier to pick up those and toss in the wash, than trying to scrub a carpet.

And maybe pick a carpet color to match the catfood, LOL!

Update: So far so good w/ the BB walnut litter! It's been a week and I'm sold! Yes it's not perfect but I literally don't think there is a litter on the market that is perfect! There is some tracking but unless you have pellets, that's unavoidable there's going to be some tracking expected. Cats seem to like it which is huge so I will stick with this and see how it goes in the new house in a few weeks~fingers crossed! THANKS for all the input! :)
