Hi all,

Again, another question! I'm sorry! This will be my first time giving Corduroy this much insulin at such a low number, so I'm stalling while I ask some of you for advice. His +6=196, +8=168 and now his PMPS=145. Should I go ahead and give him the 1.5 units still?

Thank you kindly!

Are you going to be able to monitor and do you have strips and HC? If so, SHOOT! You've got to get comfortable shooting lower numbers.

Hi Sienne,

Yes, we'll be around to monitor him...we set our alarms throughout the night. Okay, here goes!

Thanks so much for your input!

Good work tonight Brigitte! Congrats on the reduction. I hope he surfs safely the rest of the night. Looks like you get to go down to 1.25U tomorrow. That new pen is working wonders.

Hi everyone,

Thanks Wendy! However, the "good job" should go to my husband really. I stayed up as long as I could, until a little after midnight, but had to go to bed. I have a busy work schedule today and a long drive to and from work. My husband works a lot too, but he works from home, so there is no danger of falling asleep at the wheel at least ;-)

I'm still not sold on this shoot low to stay low though, because I mean, he went all the way down to 37 at only+1.75. Now, he's back up to 501 at +11! I'm not sure how other cats react with this method, but it seems like Corduroy doesn't react well. I'm wondering if, since we think it might be the new pen and it's potency, we should go back to what we were originally giving him before the week when his bg levels wouldn't go down, like .75?

I was so scared last night when it went that low in that little amount of time. I was afraid that after having given him that much, 1.5 (which haven't given in a looong time), there would be no way to counteract it. I probably gave him way too much Karo syrup, but I was really worried! As on the SS, I gave him 1 tsp at +1.5 and then 2 tsp at +1.75 after having seen that it went down so much in only 15 minutes! I have never really heard or read the amount of Karo syrup to give him, only that I need it available, so I'm never sure how to go about that.

Any advice would be appreciated. I will be giving him his AMPS in about 15 minutes.

Thanks so much for the support and help guys!!!

the goal is to get him to regulation numbers at the very least..... low numbers are ideal..... a few low blues.... and med and high greens are the ultimate goal since it reflects normal bg numbers like it was before becoming diabetic.

the 501 is a bounce reaction from his liver dumping hormones in reaction to him going so low..... it's perfectly normal.
His body isn't used to normal numbers any more and you are giving insulin to help his body get back to where it should be.

It is challenging.... and scary at times.... and when the board is working properly, you have lots of support here to be talked thru how to respond and keep
him safe.
If you are there with him, monitoring, then he is safe because you are helping steer him back up.....
it's the whole reason you test..... so you can steer when needed.....

it really does work, brigitte! shoot low to stay low - but cats that are bouncy have to get used to those lower numbers and then they will lessen the bounces and eventually stop (we hope!) I think Corduroy will do better for you shooting lower, but you're not going to see a change overnight. Just keep it up - experienced people will shoot anything over 50ish.

I would stay at the 1.25u for at least 6 cycles and let's see what he's doing. He might bounce for as long as 3 days from last night's 30's - if you need a refresher about bouncing, it's in the "New to the group" sticky, in the links at the bottom, look at New Dose Wonkiness, 2nd post describes bouncing.
