Coping with feeling anxious

Hi everyone. I am wondering how you all cope with feeling anxious when leaving the house after giving your cat insulin as I find I become very anxious if I have to leave the house for more than a few hours at a time. I worry about Lucy having a hypoglycemic episode so sometimes if I am going to be out all day I give the PM insulin dose very late the night before and give the next dose when I get home but I know this probably is not a good idea. In the coming weeks I have a few days where I will be out two days running so not giving Lucy her insulin before I leave both days is probably not a good idea. Also at the moment her glucose levels are not swinging all over the place but gradually coming down as we increase the insulin dose. On the days I am out most of the day I leave the iCam on so I can see how Lucy is doing and my friend checks in on her too. But still I feel anxious. I hope this is the right forum to post this in. I usually post in the relaxed lantus forum but thought this is a more general issue and as I am new to the board I wasn't sure where to post about a more general issue. Thank you.

Voula I completely understand as I work full time with a 2 hrs commute. I think the more info you can gather about how Lucy responds to the insulin will help. Two days ago Silver was under 150 - lowest I'd ever seen and I was scared to shoot the usual dose. But the next time I did. So now if he gives me a low blue before I'm about to go out I know he will be fine. The more info you can get the better you'll feel going out. But I would try to be sure you're dosing every 12 hrs not less or more unless only 15 mins or so.

Thank you Juliet. From the tests I have done I can see it is unlikely that Lucy's blood glucose will drop too low on the current dose. But I know you understand the anxiety I feel and I thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences too.

I sure do!! I just ran to the store for a hypo kit as this mommy shot her first green and my hands are shaking.

When I was attempting to manage Spitzer, I started driving home at lunch to check on him.

Hi Juliet. I have the hypo kit don't worry about that though hopefully we will never need it.

Hi BJM. I totally understand you doing that because you were anxious.

He was a complicated case. Due to inflammatory bowel disease, he might or might not vomit up a meal and thus might or might not hypo on me. I had times I found vomit everywhere and had to check his glucose to make sure he wasn't too low. Or I'd come home and discover I needed to add a supplemental, in and out insulin, to take off the edges. It was exhausting.

That is great Juliet. Keep up the good work and I hope your vet will be impressed by your success.

I hope feeling anxious is normal because I sure do!

You're doing great. :) It will get easier in time.

I'm just glad to see that I am not the only one getting whacked out over a pet.LOL! Everyone in my life thinks I'm a little looney by now! Some say" but it's only a cat" ! I sometimes sit and look at him and wonder" how can I care so much about a little critter, that I am obsessing, making it my main concern in life" ? I'm just glad to know that there are others out there like me....THANKS GUYS for giving me a sanity check!!! Hard to get anything else done sometimes!

My friends think I'm nutters, too. Sometimes I show up late to events or skip out all together if Buster's numbers aren't looking right. I have left gatherings to drive home 20 minutes, test/feed/shoot and then drive back. I take Buster with me on road trips and keep him at the hotel just so I can have a little vacation because I'm too paranoid to leave him with someone else (my problem - it's totally do-able, I just don't think I would enjoy my vacation because I'd be worried about what's going on at home the whole time). There are different strategies you can employ to work around most any situation, but you have to think ahead.

You definitely bond with your cat in a very different way that others won't get unless they've been there. We're there. We understand. Get all the data you can. It's the best peace of mind.
