Hi All. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes 11/27 and started on Bexacat 11/4. He has had diarrhea, which I've read is common with Bexacat, but he's also had that when starting any new medication. He also has a history of diarrhea whenever trying to switch foods, or trying wet food. I am aware that diarrhea is a known common adverse reaction to both Bexacat and Senvelgo, but we're still in the "trying conventional treatment" phase of "Bexacat or Senvelgo should be discontinued in cats that develop diarrhea that is unresponsive to conventional treatment.", and that's what I have questions about
His recheck 11/7 was great other than the diarrhea, for which my vet prescribed Proviable Forte and prescription vet foods. I've seen some intermittent improvement with the Proviable -- any stools during the day are solid, night time stools are sometimes a combination of solid and liquid or are fully liquid (not explosive).
I began easing him over to the prescription vet food (Purina EN), but I guess the verdict on that was "Ew Yucky", because if his food is more than 1/3 content prescription food, he will refuse to eat it.
From reading the info sheet, not eating enough on Bexacat can be very dangerous and anorexia is a serious adverse side effect, so for the past 2 days I went back to his original food. He is eating that no problem, but his stool has of course loosened more again as a result.
Since the proviable is not completely working, and he Doesn't Like the prescription food, how long until this is considered "unresponsive to conventional treatment?" Are there other probiotics I should should ask my vet about? Other prescription foods/high fiber options he might tolerate better? Other considerations to make going into our 2 week recheck 10/11?
I'm a little bit worried about how insulin will go if we end up having to drop the Bexacat. I work full time and in-person, and I live alone without much of a support system. I'm nearly out of PTO days to stay home and monitor him due to another pet having health issues and ultimately passing away early this year. Any advice or personal experience on this front would be welcome.
