Buddy will not let me NEAR his mouth, not even to wipe the blood off.I cannot give him the Ab's.cannot squirt his Bup ,had to shoot it.
should i risk asking vet to give Covenia shot?
please let me know what you think. seems to be no AB's or the shot.

Ok thanks Sheila---the alternative seems to be the shot or no Ab's.what is the risk of no ab's?
i am waiting for a call back from the vet to ask her.

Read Dr. Lisa's info - she says dentals don't need ABs.

I think there are other injectable ABs that are not long acting. I would do your research so you know what you want to ask the vet and what is reasonable as an alternative. Frankly, if your vet says Convenia is ok, then I would have serious issues with your vet.

I did read Dr. Lisa on dentals..i belive she is referring to a general dental procedure--Buddy had all his teeth extracted and his roots were infected.i am going to wait till tommorw when hopefully i can pill him.

I believe convenia was designed for skin infections. Dr. Lisa is pretty clear that it is not appropriate for dental issues.

Clavamox might be a better choice, but you still have to get that into him through his mouth. Perhaps a compound liquid that is tuna or chicken flavored that he will drink.

We gave Klinger liquid Clavamox after his "successful" dental. He was NOT happy that we had to mess with his mouth - to give him that and bupe. I can't imagine trying to get him to eat a pill. Have you tried pill pockets? We have also melted pills in water and then used an oral syringe to administer the meds - I don't like that method and neither does Klinger. It must taste horrible.

How is Buddy feeling today?

My Arthur had 9 teeth removed about his time last year, which were about the last of of his teeth in emergency surgery. I had to give him Clavamox and Buprenex for two weeks after, I also had to syringe feed him at first to get him to eat anything. Convenia is for skin infections as we used to give it to my Siamese mix when she would itch herself bloody from an allergy.
The vet told me Clavamox does not taste bad if you can just get it into him. Yes it does sound like he will need the antibiotic if he had that many teeth removed and they were infected.
Clavamox is a pink liquid antibiotic that you just squirt into the side of his mouth, very easy to give.

Thanks Terri-I will give hm the Ab's...According to Dr. lisa'a link (see post by Sheila) an article by vet dds. Hale wrote :
"Clindymin is a fine choice for deep seated infection of soft tissue or gums" ....i guess it is considered a skin infection(?).
i will brake open the cap and pour in tuna juice and squirt in mouth-while he's under the bup, of course. Wish me luck!
