As some know my other cat Etoile had a bout of constipation so bad that he had to stay at the vets for 2 days, received 2 enemas and came home with Laxatone , so now I am out of Laxatone and with the price I was looking here for an alternative. I found some of you give Punkin mix. I bought a couple of cans of Organic Pumkin and from what I have read it's 1 teaspoon a day. Just wanted to make sure the dosage is right and if it's ok to give some to Loki (sugar cat) also. I mixed it in their food tonight and they ate it right up. Just checking if anyone else has any advice on this. Thanks so much.

Hi! Sorry to hear about the constipation issues. Some here (including me) give our kitties Mirilax (a human constipation OTC medicine--I bought the generic version of it at RiteAid). Dosage is 1/8 t (teaspoon), twice per day (mixed in with food). The name brand Mirilax is a little pricey, but I think I only paid about $8 for the generic brand and it's a big bottle.

I have used both the Miralax and the plain pumpkin to help Wink with various poop issues.

For his chronic constipation, I use 1/8t heaping teaspoon, BID if he is really bunged up. Sometimes, I can drop that to 1/8t heaping teaspoon SID.

It is tasteless, mix with canned food, and extra water. It works by osmotic action, drawing water from other parts of the body so you want to make sure you give extra water in the food to prevent dehydration.

My vet advised me to start at 1/8 t BID with the Miralax and work my way up as needed, up to 1 teaspoon BID, and then back down on the dose.

For his diarrhea, I add 1t plain pumpkin to each of his meals until the diarrhea has cleared. He eats 4 meals a day, so I add the pumpkin to the first 2 meals and then reevaluate.

Pumpkin can also help with constipation. Start with 1t once and day and then increase to BID if you need to. Up the amount of pumpkin if you need to. I freeze portions of pumpkin in a small ice cube tray, pop them out and store in a Ziploc for later use. They thaw quickly. The can of pumpkin would go bad in my fridge before I used it all up.

I've also used Beechnut baby food squash in place of the canned pumpkin. Simply use equivalent amounts.
