Constant meowing during night

My cat keeps me up all thru the night with his constant meowing!!! It is so frustrating!!! I recently increased his feedings from 2 3oz. cans a day to 3 3oz. cans a day after going into diabetes remission per his vet. No other symptoms other than this increased hunger. Sleeps ALL day. I have read to squirt him with water from a spray bottle or to use ear plugs. Has anyone tried these methods. If so, were they effective? Or, does anyone have any other suggestions? I am at my wit's end. Thank you.

Hello,

Meowing (and indeed howling) at night can - as I understand it - sometimes be a symptom of hyperthyroid disease. And HT disease causes increased appetite just as diabetes does.... And although HT can typically make cats more active and somewhat restless it can also cause lethargy in some cats.

However, the increased vocalisation could also be caused by other things. Impaired vision, deafness, and neurological conditions can, I think, also cause this. (And my 3 current kitties are vocalising a lot more lately (especially at night) following the deaths of 2 of their companions recently.)

Maybe a trip to the vet is needed? A check-up and some blood tests maybe...?

Thank you for your timely response. Sorry to hear about the loss of 2 of your pets. I have heard that our cats can become quite stressed/upset when losing a companion. My cat is an only cat. He is 13 yrs. old so is getting up there in age. He did have a rather extensive workup done last month at the vet and everything checked out ok. But I guess things could very well have changed. It is so expensive-last month's bill was $122. I am on a limited income. I guess I am going to have to have him checked out though. I will have to have the vet come to my house because the last visit there he became so distraught he wouldn't eat for a day and a half. He just laid on the couch looking sad. He was very aggressive towards the staff.

Both of mine started vocalising all night over the past year.

It really puts a stress on human relationships when you are sleep deprived. I feel for you. @-)

Mine are 14ish years old (we think) and both indoor cats, so haven't had a huge amount of mental stimulation during their lives. We have put the 'serenading' down to dementia & insecurity.

What has helped enormously is encouraging them to spend the night downstairs (we have a door at the bottom of our staircase), and then using a plug-in Feliway diffuser next to the shut door. If they cry, we can still hear them, but the shut door stops the Feliway from diffusing throughout the house.

It has calmed them down a lot, as has providing several other beds, shelves & vantage points for them around the house. Two cats. A dozen cat beds. We are over run.

However, it is possible to give your cats antidepressants if everything else fails. Many respond very well to it & live out happy lives.

My diabetic (in remission) kitty Dusty is very quiet at night, he sleeps with me and is very calm all night. My non-diabetic kitty Beni is another story, ever since converting them both to wet Fancy Feast he just doesn't get enough food so around 1AM every night he starts meowing, jumping on the bed, opening drawers, knocking over lamps, just turning into a demon  ! I just ignore him and he'll go away. For a while I started leaving some Evo dry food overnight and it kept him content but then Dusty was getting into it and then both starting drinking water like crazy although their glucose readings were good. You can try leaving some Evo and keep a close eye on him or as others have suggested, get a timed feeder, or right before bed just leave out a nice lump of wet food. I feel for you... Sleepless in Hawaii....

If it is impaired vision, one thing you could try is a night-light. One of my friends had a cat that had issues seeing, especially at night, and would yowl the night away. She plugged in a night-light and the nighttime restlessness stopped immediately.

There are some really good suggestions given to me. I might have to try a Feliway diffuser. Tonight I am going to start with spraying him with a water bottle (just a squirt or 2 as someone has suggested one another site.). I also think when I give him his last feeding right before bedtime I will only give him one-half of it. Then if he insists upon meowing during the nite I'll just get up and feed him the other half and hope that holds him till morning. I do leave my kitchen light on all night already so that should solve that issue. I also might put cotton in my ears. If these things don't work after this weekend then I will probly call his vet on Monday and ask if he can have the Evo dry food since he is in remission from diabetes. Then if he can be satisfied with just maybe getting that once during the night I wouldn't mind being woke up. But if he continues with the constant waking me up then maybe I'll need a timed feeder. They probly don't make a timed feeder for wet food, do they? I also plan on buying some catnip hoping that will help. I have to wait another 10 days or so to buy most of this stuff tho but at least I can start with the water bottle.

You can freeze part of the food and leave it out to be nibbled as it thaws.

Most auto feeders work with wet or dry food. Careful with the earplugs though, there might be an emergency in the middle of the night and you won't hear a thing; IE smoke alarm and such...
