Considering changing to Lantus from BCP PZI

Chase has been diabetic for 5 or more years, so not likely this will cause remission. He has been mostly high on PZI (ps low to mid 300s) with the occasional low to throw me off on 1.25-1.5 U PZI BID. His PZI is ready to be replaced, so I'm thinking about trying Lantus. It's a bit scary though. And the price is MUCH higher than PZI. If he was on 1U BID, approximately how long would those 5 pens last? Any tips or anything to alleviate my concerns about trying Lantus? I wouldn't be home to do a lot of spot checks. I'd like to see his numbers being more even and controlled, but I'm concerned that this insulin would be too high maintenance. I know many people LOVE it, so I'm looking for some input.

Thanks,
Jeanene

so far I'm getting about 2 months out of a pen so my five pens should last me about 10 months if all goes well.

as far as the testing and all, you do what you can. i can't test thru the daytime monday thru friday, but i can get tests here and there in the evenings since i tend to stay up pretty late and i usually do more testing on the weekends. lately i haven't been doing much though unfortunately. life just seems to be in the way these days but look out ears, i got a three day weekend coming up! :)

We switched from Idexx PZI in March. Blackie has also been diabetic for almost 5 years, but he became unregulated on PZI. It took a little while, but we are getting great numbers on Lantus now. Our pens have only been lasting for 28 to 35 days, but it seems to be different for everyone. Read the sticky's at the top of the forum for more information on Lantus, the protocols and storage & handling. Good luck with your decision.

Hi! We switched to Lantus from PZI Vet (Idexx) last November. When we switched Stu had been diabetic for about 4 years. He was never really regulated on PZI, and I didn't know anything and only had him tested at the vet's, very sporadically. Now, with testing and Lantus Stu is doing great. But Lantus has a steep learning curve, and everything you learned about PZI has to be unlearned! It's worth it. The pens usually last for us about 35 days. I don't like to chance it beyond that. Read all the "Stickys" and ask questions. This is a terrific forum with many knowledgeable people.
