? Confusing numbers...

Hello everyone, I am new here, my name is Kassy and this is my sweet boy Penguino.

Pengs was diagnosed in 2017 and is currently on 2 units of Lantus 2x daily.

He eats Darwin's raw food.

I just did a home test because I noticed some twitching in his legs, and the numbers are strange.

Right before food: 132
Right after food: 91

I've never seen numbers go down after eating. Has anyone else?

These numbers are also much lower than usual.

I am using the AlphaTRAK2. Also, I am just now seeing that the strips expired a few months ago. Perhaps that's the issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes....usually if the number goes down after feeding, it's because the pancreas is producing at least some insulin!

Do you home test daily before every shot and get at least 1 test in between shots to see how low he's going on the current dose?

What time were the tests in relation to giving the shot? How far apart were the two tests? If a food has zero carbs, it might not impact blood sugar numbers. Or it could be expired strips.

Test 1: 7:20pm
Food: 7:30pm
Test 2: 7:50pm

That sounds promising! I have not been testing daily, it sounds like I need to.

We strongly recommend testing before each shot, to make sure it's safe to shoot. Plus any time you can get a test mid cycle is a good idea. We determine how to dose the Lantus based on how low it takes the cat. Those lows are somewhere in the middle. Either curves or spot checks will help figure that out.

Thanks! Do you all find it easiest to draw blood from the ear?

I find the ear safer and less rist of infection than the paw pads. For some of mine I would be in danger trying to get blood from a paw pad.

I find it very easy to draw from the ear always prick on an angle, not straight down

There are a couple people who test the paw, but most use the ear here.

I've never seen an actual infection from using paw pads...

I think getting test however you can with less stress and accurate methods is the way to go...ears or paws.
