Hello everyone,

I would appreciate if you could give me your opinion based on your experience regarding the following:
On Monday we started insulin twice daily. Last night I tested Balou before feeding and before shot: 94. I tested again 20' after feeding: 100. I didn't give insulin. Today I tested her before feeding and before shot I got 95. I tested again two hours after feeding (I didn't give insulin) I got 84. The vet said that I should test her every time 2 hours after feeding and if I get 200< I should give her insulin.
 
From what I understand, with a lower number at diagnosis (327 is certainly not normal but it also not extremely high) sometimes the change to low carb food and a couple of insulin injections, the pancreas will actually kick in and start working again. You definitely want to keep testing, but I've seen that happen before with few people on the board.
 
Hi there ~ How wonderful that you are getting those "No shoot" readings on Babalou, (love the name!) As Tammy said in post #2, some cats respond with a low carb diet change, carbs 10 % or under. When it is her shot time, test, if her number is 200 or less, stall without feeding and in 20 minutes retest. If still under you can stall another 20 minutes if your schedule will permit and if she doesn't come up, skip the shot and go ahead and feed her. The stalling without food so that food is not influencing the numbers. The fact that this morning you tested her after she ate and the number came down even more could indicate that her pancreas has started back up. You are doing great and I am so glad that you are testing her! She might be one of those lucky cats that just needed a few insulin injections to get her going again. Glad you skipped the shots. Keep us posted.
 
Many cats will test from 100 to 180 mg/dL higher at the vet.
Changing to low carb food may drop the glucose 100 to 200 mg/dL (even 1 report of 300 mg/dL).
With those 2 factors, it is possible you many not need insulin for long, if at all, given the numbers you're getting.
 
Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for your replies. We continue without insulin. I tested her today 2 hours after giving her food I got 49! I got scared and tested myself to see if the glucometer works and it showed normal levels. I fed Balou immediately and called the doctor, he couldn't believe it because the cat is OK (she plays and eats less than the usualof course which I think is good, no signs of hypo), he told me to test again after an hour. I'll keep you posted. I'm really confused now.
 
I can only say, imagine what would have happened if you hadn't been home testing! Don't be confused!! You are very clever and have kept Babalou safe.

I can only add that a 49 two hours after eating is fantastic! I tested my non-diabetic cat and he was 42 on my meter. This is good news - it means her pancreas is doing what it is supposed to. Crossing paws you continue to get these great results!

I don't even want to think what would have happened if I hadn't been home testing and if I had followed vet's plan (insulin twice a day without home testing for a week). I am so grateful I found this forum!!!Otherwise I wouldn't have learned about home testing and its importance. Thank you so much! Now I am holding my breath and waiting...
 
We are happy you found us too, as we all are! It is sad that the vets just don't know enough about feline diabetes but , that is unfortunately the way it is. They are so busy in their practices that they don't take the time to go back and learn the latest research on feline diabetes and feline nutrition. They get their nutrition from Purina who controls he RX food industry..... Keep us informed!
