It's Buca's first day on Lantus. I've been testing him all day. He started at amps 493 his number have been steadily decreasing all day...
+1 446
+2 453
+3 493
+4 468
+5 423
Had to go out for a few hours
+8.5 405
+9.5 405
+10. 387
+12 pmps 403

+1 380
+2 310
+3 268

I have given him 1u bid today and am concerned it's going down too fast.... He's been so high for so long. Is this normal?? What if it keeps going down? I gave him some high carb food aand it didn't seem to do much this evening.

I don't think that is too fast. But I'm going to ask someone from LL to take a look as well. This is his first day on Lantus, right? It is going to take several cycles for the shed to fill, and for him to settle in to the insulin. At first, you'll see numbers that look like a smiley shaped curve, high at PS readings, and lower towards the middle of the cycle. Over time, as you collect data and he gets used to the shots and doses, the shape of that curve will change. But right now, those numbers don't look bad at all.
Try to hold off on feeding the high carb food. Save that for when the numbers go really low. I'm going to look in Lantus and see who is online that can come and explain things better for you.

You're doing great gathering all that data! This gets easier and a lot less stressful, trust me!

Hi Bucasmom! Great to see Buca doing well on his first day with Lantus. Dont feel worried about those falling numbers, that's what the Lantus juice for  As long as you're testing,, there is no worry that he will go too low. Even so, you can always post here and there will be lots of experienced eyes helping you to bring him up with feeding HC gravy canned or Karo, honey etc.
What are you feeding Buca now? And what is the HC food you've fed him?

Phew thank God... I was getting a little nervous. I"m used to Caninsulin where his numbers hardly budged. I will await more replies. Thanks! I feel a little better. It's late here but I'm going to keep testing for a couple more hours.

I'll update his ss as soon as I get computer access... Having to write from my Blackberry right now lol

Right now I'm feeding Whiskas pate which are gluten free. The high carb is leftover dry Hills W/D he used to be on. He's only been on exclusively wet food for a couple days. Today was first day lantus and wet food only. :)

More experienced help will be online later. Dont worry, read the sticky & get prepared.

I print it out for easy to access; you know those com! nailbite_smile Always malfunciton when you really need to log on!
When I switch my Rosy to all canned food, her bg reacted quick to the Lantus jabs. It is good that you are home testing constantly for the first few days.
The HC you've fed is the dry knibbles? Usually it does not boost the bg immediately but it dose require more time to get it out from Buca's body. It is not a good choice of use. Get those gravy type canned food; usually those yummy ones. Feed when Buca gets really low or is diving fast & you want him to slow down. We call more than 100 pts an hr diving fast.

Ah I see. Ok sounds good. Lol I did print that out but left it at work yesterday... And of course, the computer isn't working right when I really need it lol

I just tested him +4 324 so that could be the dry stuff I gave him a while ago. Only about a tbsp though. I know he's technically still too high, but I was just worried that it was too fast.

I just saw Bob's note on the Lantus ISG from last night.

Please remember to keep track of your test data on your spreadsheet. It helps us to help you when you have all of the numbers in one place. One thing you may want to remember is that the nature of a curve is that numbers are lower as you get closer to the nadir (or peak action of insulin). Normal blood glucose (BG) numbers are roughly between 50 - 120 so Buca wasn't getting too low. I wouldn't be concerned unless you cat's numbers were dropping very quicky AND were getting closer to the lower end of the normal range. Overall, you want to see your cat spending as much time as possible in the normal range.

FWIW, some cats that are switched from another insulin to Lantus have a bigger than expected initial response. This is often temporary.

Good morning...I'm somewhat new to all this but are you or have you changed slowly from the dry food to the low carb canned? I know my Wonton had a rough time when I switched cold turkey. I had to do 2/3 dry and 1/3 LC canned for a week, then continued the next week with 1/2 and 1/2 until she was on all low carb.

I have no advise to give as i'm still pretty new to it myself but i will say when my Annie was first diagnosed she was put on Caninsulin - after injection she would have a big drop really fast, then her numbers would come back up after like 3 hours. I switched her to Lantus, which is a longer acting insulin, and the first day her numbers dropped down a lot, but i remember being scared just because i was used to the caninsulin and it's big drop. But Lantus is more gentle. The HC food, even a teaspoon, is enough to raise her bg levels alot.
Looks like there may have been an overlap of the am shot wearing off, and the onset of the pm shot.... but don't quote me on that

Ruby had a big response on her first couple of doses after we switched to Lantus. On the second dose, she dropped to a 72 (on the AlphaTrak). She didn't keep doing that for long, though.

Thank you all so much for your replies so far! :)

As I mentioned before, my computer is down so I am unable to update Bucaa's ss. So sorry for the confusion there.

I switched him from dry to wet slowly over the course of last week, until I could be home on the weekend from work to monitor him for his first couple days on Lantus and strictly wet food.

I see his numbers levelling out a bit more today around 288-324 so far. I gave him .5u this morning but I think I will stick to 1u and be consistent with that, test him in the morning before work, when I come home for lunch, and then again when I get home, and then run a curve next saturday after he's been on it a week.

A big indicator also will be if he stops urinating outside his litter box. We've been keeping it super clean for him every day and he still has been going outside of it. This morning though, DH said he saw him using it so that's a good sign! :)
