I gave my Jinx 1U of lantus 13 hrs ago at injection time he was 317 at +10 he was 180 and now at +13 he is 79 should i be concerned this is the first time his BG's have done this since the start of treatment we've been treating for two weeks

I don't think at +13 you need to be concerned about a hypo, but I do think you may have pancreas action and maybe, just maybe, your kitty is going off insulin.

You changed his diet to Wellness canned from dry food a few days ago. Jinx needs extra hometesting and dose adjusting during this time, as the diet alone may be all Jinx needs.

A foster kitty (Bean) I took in a few weeks ago was a dry food eater, within a couple days of changing her to wet food she went off insulin completely.

It sounds like you are seeing results, so that's good.

Certainly do not give insulin at BG=79.

Are you giving insulin every 12 hours ? Which means a dose would
have been due at +12. Did you dose at +12?

I don't know a lot about Lantus, but I have heard here that it takes
a while for it to build up in the body to a therapeutic level.

Also, in some cats, the pancreas begins producing insulin on its own
after a short period of treatment with insulin...perhaps that is what
is happening with Jinx. That would be good news.

Right now, test again in an hour. Has Jinx had his breakfast ?

79 is a good number. We don't really worry about a hypo until numbers begin
dropping below 60--and if they continue to drop.

I hope more will come here soon with Lantus knowledge.

I did not inject at +12 because at +10 he was at 180bg and our vet said not too inject if he is below 200bg he did have breakfast at the +10 time and at +12 thank you so very much to all who replied that is outstanding

Are all of the lowest numbers close to shot times?
I am asking because late nadir is like that, no?

When did you make the change from dry to wet foods? It takes a few days to get out of the system but then you would see a decrease in need for insulin, maybe even no need at all.

if you did not give the am shot, can you test a few times to see when you start to get higher numbers.

Here is info to print out and keep handy, just in case.

Are you posting on the lantus board? There are folks there that can explain how lantus works. Also, you may want to get a spreadsheet up soon. This will help us help you through this process. Hope you guys are having a good day!
