Compounding medication question

Don't have the answer but big hugs :bighug:

This is how my vet taught me. I use a dropper vs. a syringe for the water (so I can dribble it and better control) and instead of stroking the throat he has me lightly blow into his nose. I don't have to wrap Gizmo any more but I do find that positioning him high enough for comfort and control works the best (I use the back of the couch). Also give a small amount to eat after so the pill gets down the digestive system and not stuck in the throat.


ETA - Pill pockets do work! Use the Greenies Pill Pockets Canine Roasted Duck & Pea - they are the lowest carbs and only use a small amount - enough to cover the pill - also give a small ball of the PP w/o the pill first then with the pill.

Yes. Use just enough to cover the pill. Also, if you get some #4 gel caps and put the pill in that, it will lessen the chance that Norman will taste it. Some people put butter on the gelcap and throw it down the throat - it'll slide right down.

I use a pill shooter.

Usually there is a sweetener in the suspension, but since the Pred may knock him out of remission anyway, it's worth a try.
 
I have. It did raise Gizmo's BG but others here say it doesn't with their cats. You just pinch off a small portion of the whole PP. I can't explain the consistency but Gizmo did eat them and liked them.
 
You can get prednisolone (you want that instead of prednisone for cats) compounded into chew treats at on line pharmacies (Diamondback, RoadRunner, BCP). Neko had other medications (bupe, budesonide) compounded into liquid chicken flavour and neither of them impacted her BG. Tell the compounding pharmacy you want it sugar free for a diabetic.
 
I was going to say what Wendy said - you can ask for meds to be compounded without sugar.

For Trix, I used gelcaps for her pilling. I put her meds in the gelcap, slathered it with a small amount of butter to make it slippery, and followed up with a syringe of water to wash it down. I also approached her from behind, rather than head-on. I would kneel on the floor and held her wedged (gently, of course) between my knees. Then, I pilled from the side of her mouth.

ECID, as usual...some cats adjust to pilling, some never trust it. It takes a little time to figure them out....prayers for you and Norman!
 
If it's any help, Noah gets transdermal BUPE from a compounding pharmacy and I still get looks of disbelief from our techs because they didn't know or think that was possible. That's really annoying. He hated the oral liquid so much I felt like I was killing him.

I agree - transdermal is fabulous if it is an option for pred! I use transdermal for my civvie's thyroid meds, and it is sooooo much easier than any other form. You just have to be sure to keep their ears clean - the cream likes to build up, and when that happens, it blocks the meds from being absorbed.
 
You can also ask about Dexamethasone, which is an injectable steroid equivalent to prednisolone. I've used it with a few cats who were on multiple meds or very hard to give pills to - an injection is much easier for everyone concerned. Just make sure you get the right dosage.
